"defer [payment of] the money owed to a later time when, hopefully, home values have improved."
This sounds like if values don't rise you dont make payments. I am sure that would prevent forclosures but at what cost. I dont mind to defer the payments but it has to be some reasonable period of time not "when the home values have improved."

I dont think either Obama or McCain can prevent the slide. Buffett is part of the problem folks, he is in bed with soooo many polticians, big business, ect.... There is no way that wall street could have pulled this off without him knowing and investing around this problem. He has such a small position of toxic paper. Just enough to make it look like he "saw nothin" .
Any way I think that the outcome of this will be extraordinary with 1000 trillion of derivatives worldwide deflating/deleveraging later. This tsunami has even gotten close to shore yet. It is going to rise up and wash the earth clean of a lot of companies, wealth, governments, ect..... and we all have no choice but to hang on for one hell of a ride. It really will be a sink or swim environment and a lot of our money is going down the drain foolishly attempting to bail out the financial titanics. Time to start waxing down your surf boards. Only the nimble can navigate this event--- the titanics are going down.
