Mike Long has been in the alternative investment business since 1974. He graduated from Washington and Lee University with a degree in economics. He founded Wall Street's first managed futures department at Shearson (in the Sandy Weill days) where he was a Director of Hayden Commodities. He was in charge of Shearson's in-house trend following program and was responsible for approving all outside commodity trading advisors. He was headhunted to work as Director of Trading (EVP) of Millburn Partners ( Malcolm Wiener), the largest derivatives manager on the planet where he was introduced, oddly enough, to short selling of equities and some of the first hedge fund managers to specialize in this area. He wrote a series of
articles for Barron’s that dealt with short selling, where he first debunked popular ideas about short squeezes by hypothesizing that heavily shorted stocks actually underperformed the market, an idea later confirmed almost unanimously by the academic community, an idea that is still not accepted, to this day, by the popular media covering Wall Street.
Mike founded Short Alert which operated from 1996 to 2011. Short Alert produced approximately 100 reports that produced alpha of 15% - verified by independent academics and the Barron's Statistical Department. Short Alert was featured on the cover of Barron's on 7/6/09 ("Short These Stocks - the short-sales picks of a small North Carolina research firm have produced 20% annual returns over a decade.") - which turned out to be the proverbial kiss of death. The stocks mentioned in the article were some of the best performing stocks ever assembled in a single Barron's article. He was actively involved in the fields of competitive intelligence, library science and investigative journalism and underwent formal training in elicitation technique. He was the founder and Managing Partner of Short Alert and was responsible for the business model analysis, investigative work, and fact checking. Mike also conceptualized the idea and the design of reports for squareoneanalytics.com, a highly interactive, best-of-breed website and in-house tool used for tracking the activities of short sellers, metrics useful to identifying shorts and short selling performance trends by sub-sector. More recently, he has been doing some one-off consulting that is short selling related.
