Solazyme (SZYM -1.8%) has done a sharp about-face since popping nearly 6% at the open after a Motley Fool article praised the company's management on Sunday. The Fool notes: "Keeping the streak of milestone accomplishments alive rests squarely on these leaders' shoulders. If I were an investor here, I'd feel pretty good about that."

A major business restructuring wasn't enough to get struggling GT Advanced (GTAT -0.9%) to close higher today. The solar/LED equipment maker will now be run on functional lines (sales, R&D) rather than on the basis of business units. GT is also eliminating the position of chief strategy and new business officer, and is idling a St. Louis pilot manufacturing facility - the latter move is expected to save $15M/year. The company announced huge layoffs and a management shakeup in October.

GT Advanced (GTAT) -7.2% after warning it expects Q3 revenue to be at the low end of its $110M-$140 guidance range (consensus stands at $153M). In addition, the company: 1) Plans to cut 25% of its workforce in a restructuring it expects will produce $13M/year in cost savings, and $4.2M in charges. 2) Warns 2013 will be challenging, and that Asian LED/solar equipment customers are "experiencing severe financial difficulties." 3) Has re-shuffled the execs in charge of LED and solar ops. As was seen at the recent solar industry get together in SF, the solar market competition is in full throttle. Efficiencies and innovations were in focus. All know that the companies going to survive in this industry, that isn't going away, will be the ones offering high efficiency while controlling production costs. GTAT is the source for the highest efficiency technology at increasingly reduced unit costs. This portion of the GTAT offerings will remain stable if not ramp up. Therefore I see no rash of cancellations. Using the old furnaces are just not a viable option for producers wishing to stay in business.

The sapphire business has done extremely well in this newer market with applications from automotive to medical. They have a winner that has proven the ability sustain them during lulls in in PV, etc.

Add that to their development of silicon carbide furnaces due out CY 2013/14 for power management applications and others, then we have a robust cutting edge company and great opportunity.

Current share pricing is not just a result of being tied to the beaten up solar industry, but the fact that 94% of their customers are in Asia (with China being predominate) and pending tariffs could be a major blow to GTAT. That's the biggee in GTAT share prices today.

My expectation is that as solar is on the cusp of parity with traditional power generation, if not already there, and the fact that the unfair trade complaints come from a small minority of American/German businesses in this segment, that both sides will back off. Significantly more American companies would be hurt and jobs lost by these tariffs than if they are imposed. New trade deals with China are totally necessary but I can't see the crucible being a fledgling clean energy industry like solar power when we are often reminded of global environmental impacts of the hydrocarbon age.

The $4 entry price in June was too good to be true, but it is not too late at the current $4.86 with a target of $10-12 in the near future. Q1 reporting is scheduled for Aug 1 after market close with an EPS expectation of about $0.50 depending who you ask. I expect a nice surprise and a share price pop that will garner much attention from the doubters who have not spent the time to recognize my friends in Merrimack.

I am long on GTAT

right now is the time to buy. The competitors for the mobile chip market came in ok, but they are still going to be smoked in a few hours. QCOM has the solid mgmt, tech and royalties to boot when the mobile hardware market is flying, especially globally, unaffected by economic turmoil. Seems like mobile devices are up there on the priority list with water, food and oxygen.

Solazyme (SZYM -10%) is downgraded by Raymond James to Market Perform, as the firm says the stock's risk/reward profile has become less attractive after a recent run-up. The firm says the versatility of SZYM's algae-produced oils opens the door to a wide range of opportunities, but the stock is likely to continue to be prone to sharp up-and-down swings.

Thanks Emmanuel, I totally agree with your analysis and I am buying all the GTAT shares that I can at this bargain price. The punishment dished out on this stock after what was a solid quarterly report that just fell short of expectations was amazing but allowed me to triple my position for a song. I just wish I had followed your call on ebay a few months ago.

The Chinese will make their panels elsewhere to avoid the tariffs. That is clear for the big guys. To do this they will have to tool up new facilities offshore with the latest tech. Sounds promising. The Taiwanese already see an opportunity in this with their purchase of furnaces within 24 hrs of the announcement on tariffs. Maybe US mfgrs will get smart and invest too given this chance to compete using the latest tech. Too much invested in China on solar to sit still. More efficiency = parity and I don't think we'll be hurt much by these tariffs. Relax. It has all been planned out.

Very pleased. Solid quarter given industry trends. Inventories up 50% y/y and improved plant combined with that healthy backlog tells me GT is preparing to take off.

I'm blown away by the success of the sapphire group and I think we just saw the bottom of the PV segment with solar panel mfgrs having to provide greater efficiencies in order to survive.

Tom G should be giddy after all the bashing the stock has taken and the outlook call will be interesting. Well done GT.
