Alvarion: Best in Class WiMax Play Sparks Buyout Chatter [View article]
CLWR/S talks again, ALVR will near term upside. We got stopped out in 12-13 range last Fall and currently staying away. The struggle for fatty margins will be ugly....
WiMAX Industry Struck By Sprint/Clearwire Deal Blowup [View article]
good stuff, yeah ALVR has taken a beating and is down from 15, where we foolishly bought, and now UNDER 10....we had to sell at a big loss.
The real winner here is CSCO, which got Navini for a paltry 300M (relative to CSCO's bank acct) and now has an option on the WiMAX space which they can exercise down the road.....

Well, this was one we got wrong in the short term -- we got stopped out a while ago, and it is a good think. CLWR and S came out today and pooped on the whole WiMAX "thang," sending shares of CLWR through the toilet. ALVR naturally lost another 5%.....
One to watch, but we are sitting on cash until the financials stop bludgeoning us.....
Why Cisco Should Buy Alvarion - Not Navini [View article]
CSCO bought navini @ 12x trailing 4 qtr sales. If a rival paid -- say -- half that multiple (6x) ALVR's sales (220M in sales for last 4 q), it would value ALVR north of 1.3B..Take 61m sharte outstanding and you get a fair value somewhere in the low 20s, assuming a 12-13% WACC.
bottom line: ALVR is undervlaued and the market should -- with time -- correct the mispricing and readjust the stock upward.
problem is we have taken a 25% haircut since getting into the stock @ 14.95
Can Alvarion Compete with the Big Boys? [View article]
good point on the valuation and emerging market motif: we are long ALVR as well and are down quite a bit since taking a bite @ 14.95....it is a shame Merriman came in and shouted off nonsense. MOT could buy ALVR, that is a possibility the Street is not thinking about.

it was bust, ALVR only guided in line, so the stock sank like a stone. We remain long and look to sales and operating momentum/leverage as the basis of our investment thesis

looks like a hatchet job by thestreet.com -- ALVR is up 2 days in a row after they tried to take it down with the CSCO/navini stuff.....ALVR is a good company, that is all that matters....I think we shook the tree and got the iguanas out, alas.

Thank you for a great article. We are long ALVR as well and down sharply this month, but sticking to our position, as we feel WiMAX is a long term bet and ALVR ultimately WILL get acquired.
WiMax (Over) Hype: Alvarion Not Likely To Be A Target After All [View article]
watch out!!!!
The author quotes QCOM CEO Paul Jacobs from 2 years ago saying "WiMAX is dead." So dead in fact that in January 2006 QCOM bought Flarion a company developing a variant of the OFDM technology on which WiMAX is based.
Hmmm...
We have a big bet on ALVR -- please refrain from trying to take the stock down with old info...the world has changed in 24 months and WiMAX is increasingly deployable.
We'll all see how solid ALVR is when they report the Q in November....
ALVR and WiMAX are both mentioned quite POSITIVELY in this article, which I believe is sent out to hundreds and hundreds of institutional and retail accounts alike...
This could help us recover the 3% hit from last week.
