  • Is It Time To Sell These PIMCO Closed-End Funds? [View article]
You also have to choose your exposure, mortgages for PDI and corporate bonds for PCI. The risk is different, hence the return is different.

  • Why Piketty Is Wrong: Part 2 - The Spirit Of An Age [View article]
Something else I'd like to mention is capital tied up in housing. That's where the US has a big advantage; it has so much space that Europe doesn't have and it's still a federalist republic unlike France where you have to places; Paris (money) and the province (that gets what's left of the money, eventually) and it's basically the same in the UK.
Federalism means that money is spread around and we should cherish that and fight tooth and nails for it (I don't really like the current trend); it gives alternatives to people and alternatives are opportunities.

I like you essay and I haven't read this book but I think Piketty may be right in the end. These great opportunities you mention and their corollary of scams and failures are possible mainly thanks to a permanent increase of the financing available. I think the few successes we can observe are basically fed by the money spent by those who failed. At one point, this will stop and a few smart people will exit at the top and get to keep their wealth. In this new world of no money, they will rule the day.

  • Credit Rating Agencies And 'Climate Change' [View article]
There is not only the atmosphere at play here. You have oceans, 3/4 of the planet's surface, and a molten core radiating heat. Add to this the relatively hectic activity of the sun (it's not a simple 100 watts bulb) and all this becomes impossible to be put in a nice future telling model.
But of course, air pollution should be fought. When I moved from Geneva to the San Fernando Valley in LA and being an active runner, I could definitively smell and feel the difference.

Hello IT, the MIT shows 3.91% inflation… http://bpp.mit.edu/usa. As to CPI, it's in the eye of the beholder. The CPI of a 5th av. socialite is going to be completely different from the CPI of a midwest farmer and nobody will ever agree. In the meantime I'm desperately googling my iPad to find a good recipe on how to eat it.

Well there was an article in the Swiss newspapers about this with interviews of people suffering of the plague of low wages. Their chief complain; we can't go on vacation with what we make. But effectively life is effectively very expensive in Switzerland.

CS pleads guilty but then what? They pay the fine, keep their license, nobody gets jailed or indicted. It's just a show. UBS just upgraded CS's rating to "buy". By the way, I've been told by a Swiss private banker that UBS has 60% of the world's billionaires in its clients' pool. Soon other banks will complain about inequality of wealth distribution.

In LA, it's getting difficult to get classes in a community college. More and more people do that; associate degree in a community college then bachelor in a U of CA. It's getting crowded.

Killer, it's the same bunch of people who are perpetually asking for stimulus, shovel ready projects and infrastructure development. One day, and I hope this day comes soon, they'll have to confront their contradictions.

The only thing that protects the middle class from feudalism is cheap energy.
After we stop breathing to save the planet, what are we going to do when the next hurricane comes ashore? Manhattan may get wet feet and what's the problem? People can move and nobody will give a dam. Look at Detroit, the best city to live in the 60's and people moved.
