The biggest problem I see here is this one; "can invoke a 1969 tax law to bypass congressional gridlock". There are so many laws in the books that you can always find one to invoke about whatever you want. This is a big problem in a supposedly "rule of law" society. In fact we are ruled by the emotions "du jour" not by the law.

VAT is debited by the entity issuing the bill. If a Chinese corp sells "trash" (good trash by the way since people buy it), it will not take any US VAT since it's Chinese.
Furthermore, I know of no country in the world that implemented VAT and got rid off another tax. VAT ALWAYS (yes I scream) comes ON TOP (screaming again) of any other existing taxes.

    It's not a law, it's a tax.

This law is a mess. I'm trying to get insurance in CA since December 2013 and still don't have it unless I go on the private market with a 70% increase and doubling my out of pocket expenses.

Problem is that the Republicans are not really the thrifty guys they pretend to be; when they see a F35 they lose control. Second, when they talk about "entitlements" they talk about SS and Medicare that you paid for through your teeth. It's not the food stamps and free phones that are going to make a difference.

They could force to go skiing and hiking in Mammoth. It's healthy and good for your cholesterol. If you don't, you pay a tax.

They were smoking on planes, drinking whiskey like we drink coffee nowadays and the economy was booming, people had a future and nobody was afraid. Now, you can live on lettuce and fluoride water for 10 more years but people are not happy, the future is gloomy and everybody is afraid of something, or so it seems. Stay healthy my friend.

The only thing that protects the middle class from feudalism is cheap energy.
After we stop breathing to save the planet, what are we going to do when the next hurricane comes ashore? Manhattan may get wet feet and what's the problem? People can move and nobody will give a dam. Look at Detroit, the best city to live in the 60's and people moved.

This law forces you to buy something or pay a fine (or a tax, or a fee, whatever they want to call it). This principle was rubber stamped by the supreme court; as you wrote, it's the law. It's revolutionary beyond expectations. The next domain I can see them forcing us to buy something is education. Because this trillion of debt will never be paid. Then it could be housing. This law's implications go extremely far; you have to buy something because some can't afford it.

In Europe when you drink a coffee you sit at a table and a waiter comes and help you; that's some luxury. At Starsucks, you wait in line, pay, wait in another line (I don't' even mention the noise of the blenders) , try not to have your drink taken away by a still sleepy customer, and you live; that's like getting food in a prison.

The fact is that Obama is unable to talk in an articulate manner about economic problems. He sounds like mid schooler who hasn't done his homework; a bunch of oil. That is worrisome. His forte is the class warfare and the Republican party has to address this problem because there is a problem. It's emotional and emotions will always trump statistics in an election.
