Should We Really Bail Out the Big Three Automakers with $73.20 Per Hour Labor? [View article]
It makes no sense to compare Big 3's labor costs to anything else then other car manufacturers because that is their competition. And if Toyota/Honda/Nissan... can make a profit selling small cars, then Big 3 had better do that to or shut down their production lines.
The UAW has been nailing its coffin for years and it seems as the final nail is going in. Bailing out Big 3 is bailing out UAW and its anti-business practices. Will millions of workers and retirees get hurt? Of course. But, we, the taxpayers, shouldn't be funding their perks.
My mother used to work for a unionized grocery chain and had some fantastic benefits. As Sam's Club, Walmart, Target, Walgreen's, etc. and other non-union companies got into the market, the union realized they needed to help themselves so they agreed to tiered pay scales. New workers got less pay and benefits. This happened a few times in the last 20 years. The UAW had better learn to eat crow.
