  • Online Search Share for November and December 2008 [View article]
GOOG global share is smaller....there are regional/country-speci... search engines in other locales freezing them out. In due time, though.

  • Hello Cloud Storage, Goodbye Consumer Hard Disk Drives [View article]
Cloud storage at this point makes more sense for software service providers in the B2B space. Instead of companies being required to make large capital investments in local storage & local ownership/maintenance/... of software licenses, this can be provided via the cloud. From the standpoint of cloud providers like MSFT, they will be chasing that money first before little individual users storing family photos, music, tax records, etc.

  • Yahoo's Bartz Indicates Plans for Search [View article]
Get rid of search? I hope that's not the best she's got. Search is where the ad industry is going. Without search, all Yahoo has to offer is overpriced display ads that no one is buying.

  • Google as a Macro Indicator? [View article]
As a matter of fact, it seems Google is an excellent macro-indicator. Search will just become a larger part of our lives, and right now Google IS search.

  • How Much Worse Can the Ad Market Get? Just Wait [View article]
Not to mention Clear Channel laying off 1,200 ad salespeople nationwide due to evaporating ad revenues in their broadcast business. Online search will probably be the lone shining star in the ad business in 2009. It is transaction based, as opposed to mushy "brand-building" & it's the best way to provide a way to measure ROI on an ad campaign.

  • Google Beats for Q4 [View article]
2009 will probably be fairly rocksteady for GOOG. Print/broadcast ad revenue is drying up, and online display will be dinged. Forget mobile/social networks for now. Advertisers are looking for something that is immediate & accountable, and right now that is search, and that is GOOG.

  • Search Advertising: Up, Down or Flat? [View article]
Efficient Frontier has hard numbers that tell us what happened in Q4. There is no spinning the results other than they are enormously disappointing.

Contrast reality with the ever-sunny, perma-bear forecasts spun out all 2008 by trade groups. These guys are almost as reality-impaired as Realtor associations. Growth forecasts for digital advertising have been adjusted & re-adjusted downwards all through 2008. Digital will do better than print & broadcast, but there is no escaping tightening marketing budgets and 2009 will still be lower than 2008.
