Investing in NYT as a sustainable business model is ludicrous. It is analogous to saying invest in horse carriages when model T is being rolled out. There may be some short term trading opportunities, but NYT has no future.
The familiar arguments based on traditional factors such as economy, cost management and so on are nothing but smoke & mirror. Sane money would not touch NYT with a 10 foot pole. Any investment can only be based on dogma and nostalgia.
With search, blog and other things available in the internet I can do it by myself all the things that the newspaper purported to do. I have stopped reading newspaper for more than 3 years and when I benchmark my knowledge and understanding of issues with others reading newspaper, I can comfortably conclude that I am better informed than the regular readers of newspaper. Newspapers are very biased and have their own agenda. Why should I pay then?
Finally junk paper got the deserving junk bond status.
