why would anyone buy the Kindle for that price when they can get an iTouch that does the same thing and about a zillion other things? And the reading experience is terrific on it. audiobooks are wonderful too. i think this article must be an ad or something.
The William O'Neil Strategy: A Quest for Upside Surprise [View article]
in tech, surprise is always possible, no matter how many surprises a company has already produced...i.e. Apple. This is a company perfectly capable of leading the innovative pack for decades. It's not a case of 'everything that can be invented, has been'. There are other players and it'll be interesting to see what they can do. But notice that the only supposedly 'killer' products hyped, were ALL Apple. No one bothers to hype a Zune or Vista killer. This makes it obvious that Apple is the leader. And they deserve the spot...they're terrific at everything.
when you invest in technology, the moat better have sharks in it because it's like investing in nothing else. i have APPL because i think it has the best moat. It's not enough to have loads of cash, a good reputation, great products and great marketing, if you can't innovate better and faster than the competition.
The reason Jobs won Fortune's Best CEO of the Decade is because for the past 10 years he has seen the future. Partly it's because he's helped create it, but he also 'gets' where technology is going and has the savvy necessary to hire worthy staff and direct them toward profitable and amazing products.
I read books on my iPhone all the time, as well as playing games (oh, and i also make a phone call now and then). When i compared the Kindle book reader with my experience of reading on the iPhone, i laughed. Even though the iPhone wasn't created as a dedicated bookreader, it's wonderful and has a much nicer user interface. I'm sure Apple will take over that market in the near future.
Amazon is a great company and i shop on it a lot (there's an app for that). I just don't know if they can compete with technology products in the long run. There's no 'safe' investment in anything. But if you love tech, Apple is the 'most likely to succeed' and still be with us in 2020, even if it loses Jobs.
How Apple's Market Share Will Propel Stock to $500, Part 2 [View article]
Great article, Jason. And Fortune has named Jobs the CEO of the decade. He's created such a strong, smart company that it will even make it without him when the inevitable happens. There are amazingly brilliant people at Apple these days, in all sectors of the business. Just as Walt Disney remains the spirit of Disney, so will Steve Jobs remain the spirit of Apple. There are people of such genius that whatever they build seems to take hold and endure. The stock will continue to do well and we'll be lucky to be able to buy in on the dips at this point. I can't guess the stock price eventually, but i'm as sure as one can be about any company...that Apple will be here in 2020, when some will not be. long APPL
Why Amazon Isn't Worried About iPhone's Kindle [View article]
Amazon sells a lot of other stuff besides books and the Kindle. Personally, i wouldn't buy a Kindle. I read at least a book a day and though i use physical books a lot, i also read books on my iPhone every evening...and i use audiobooks there too. i would buy a slightly larger (maybe half again) sized iPhone before buying a book reader. and i've found that if i don't keep the brightness up all the way, the battery lasts a really long time.
Apple vs. Microsoft: Who Will Bring the Ideal Mobile Productivity Device? [View article]
even if it costs more, having a paperback book sized computer to carry around would be wonderful. something twice the size of the iPhone would do well with everyone. saying that microsoft has something great but it's not developed yet brings to mind Vista. So by the time it's developed, who cares? Fast innovation is the name of the game. Apple does make products its customers want and it makes them so its customers can use them in the way they want to use them. But they're also great at thinking outside the box and coming up with things we didn't know we'd love! Long APPL. It's the stock for the future.
doubleTwist: An Amazon Powered Alternative to Apple's iTunes [View article]
no app store? no videos, no tv downloads? see...the thing with itunes...it's all there! I'm not knocking Amazon...i order books from them when i want hard copies...but no one has anything nearly as good as Apple...and of course, Apple doesn't exactly wait around..they keep innovating, so it's like trying to catch up with a moving target that keeps out of sight in the future.
E-Reader Wars Heating Up: Apple May Have Edge with Younger Generations [View article]
huh? young people don't read?!! that's not true. i'm a senior but i'm in bookstores a lot and there are as many kids/teens in there as older people and they are reading...check out the SciFi section. That's where they are. They also listen to books on cd's in their cars anytime they take trips and also while working out at the gym or walking/riding for exercise. they just read differently.
i do a lot of special exhibits for a zoo and the kids still pour over the books. But they are all getting iTouchs, etc a lot younger, so they are often reading almost constantly, between texting, emails, web surfing news sites and researching school topics. Eventually a tablet will replace those bookbags for many books and learning cursive writing will be a thing of the past...but the younger generation is info hungry and wants to be in the loop constanty. Humans have always loved a good story...whether oral or written. This all bodes well for Apple and probably Google stocks.
great article. i've often thought the same thing when i see big traffic patterns. People who own iPhones often say something like "it's part of me" and it does feel like that. No other technology lets us feel so connected in the way smartphones do, since we don't ever have to be apart from them. Kurzweil just reported that the Japanese have created a touchable holographic system, where you actually feel things, like rain falling on your hand. The rate of technological change is accelerating, fast...and it's very exciting. I don't think it's a question of admiring our own shine as much as just feeling amazed at how things are changing and hopeful that this 'connectedness' will mean we understand each other better. That would help a lot. In the meantime, Apple and Google remain good long term stocks...Apple especially, since it has established products. Long APPL
Apple's Tablet: The Kindle in Technicolor [View article]
makes sense to me. you can already read and listen to books on the iPhone and it's easy and comfortable. and you touch to turn a page or just let it scroll for you. elegant. it's a bit small for a speed reader because you need more space to show an entire book page, but that's about it. all in all, i prefer reading on the iPhone to the Kindle, because the iPhone is easier to 'take along'. a small tablet in color would be amazing...if it did all the iPhone stuff too...like maybe an iTouchTablet.
p.s. if anyone wants a mirror... just look at the iphone when it's off...it's very reflective and no matter your gender, you can see well enough to apply lipstick. i think a mirror is a pretty low-tech selling point.
it might capture subscribers from blackberry, but it won't from the iphone. itunes isn't the app store. i think it's coming out 2 days ahead of the iPhone.. so it'll have a couple days in the sun...then it'll rain. Apple just innovates too fast and well for the competition to get ahead. but RIMM might worry a bit since the Pre IS competition for it.
Ten Reasons Why the Kindle Is Toast [View article]
good article. and i read about a book a day (a novel) so i read everywhere. i never thought i'd read a book on the iPhone..but it's terrific! even without the Kindle APP, which i haven't installed, i have audiobooks that scroll as they're read, so you can also see the print...and regular 'to read' books. the iPhone is so easy to take along and easy to stow away, so it's kept safe. The screen is great and you can change the font size on most of the books.
the Kindle does have appeal for some people, especially those without computers, who just want a 'one-trick pony'. but what Apple does best is innovate...and i'm sure they have something in the pipeline that will be even better and i'm guessing they'll come out with something a little bigger than the iTouch...so magazine and newspaper reading will be easier.
