the other problem with this is that technology is changing so fast, that who says it'll all be what we need in 5 years? it is needed now, but building it will take time, even if the $$$ is available.

One reason the U.S was so far behind in online banking was that our banks did very early computers, which didn't handle it all that well...Europe waited a little and then went way ahead of us.
if the gov does it, it'll for sure be obsolete by the time they get done with all the haggling and wrangling. They can't even build roads that can handle the traffic when the new roads are complete (which they never seem to be anyway).

Accurate growth and technology forecasting is tough. I agree that someone will have to do this...but only people who think they'll make money at it will be game enough to try.

i think the bottom line here for Conde' Nast is 'if they don't wait too long'...like so many newspapers and tv stations did! It's been obvious for at least 2 years that more and more people were 'reading' online and getting their news there... and that NO younger readers were subscribing to newspapers and most magazines.
AP has already gotten ahead of the game with a great online 24/7 news site (they've added Macs to their desks, by the way) and i've been reading the NY Times and Washington Post online for over a year and that 'delivery' is excellent.
It's time the magazines get on board before the train leaves the station.

giving the people on the board hefty 'compensation' really amounts to a bribe by the top execs to keep the big exec $ coming, no matter what. Warren Buffet does it right, when it comes to this. good article. thank you.
