  • Advantages to TIPS in the Current Market [View article]
    TIPS have one characteristic that makes them more valuable than conventional bonds (or bond funds) of similar quality, yield and duration. That is as an insurance policy against inflation. Some part of the cost of TIPS must be ascribed to a premium for that insurance. The value of such a premium is of course debatable.

    TIP spread against 10 year treasuries was 204 basis points on January 22 followed by a rally in TIPs. Is it now time to be positive on TIPS?

    Thusfar the insurance aspect of TIPs has not been explored. Consider that a certain part of the cost of TIPs is esentially a premium paid to protect against catastrophic inflation, perhaps engineered by the Fed to save the mortgage market, Fannie, Freddie, etc. Then TIPs in the portfolio would become the salvation of retirees living on interest income.
