  • The Future of Newspapers in an Era of 'Unprecedented Plenty' [View article]
You are correct in saying that newspapers that provide content not available elsewhere will prosper in the current enviroment. Yes, the Wall Street Journal is such a paper, providing financial content you can find nowhere else and hence is able to charge for online content. However other large circulation papers, such as The New York Times, Washington Post, and USA Today etc. do not have such content. Their content is easily accessible elsewhere for free. So why buy their product? As someone who was employed for over 30 years in the newspaper industry I can say those papers do not have a bright future. However local papers, those say 25000 or under circulation provide local content not available anywhere else and not only have a brighter future, but are doing well right now.

  • Canadian Royalty Trusts – Will Dividends Rise or Fall? [View article]
One other point needs to be discussed. Past the conversion date the Canroys, I think this is correct, will no longer be charging the 15% Canadian tax that American unit holders pay now. If so that means American unitholders could get a break and will be taxed at their US rate which might or might not be higher allowing for any foreign tax credit they now claim.

  • Winter's Coming for the Boomers: Part 2 [View article]
My point was about the actual "generational theory" of Strauss and Howe. In their theory the end of "fourth turnings" and the actual "crisis", are always led by "prophet" type people. So with that in mind one of the next two or three elections "prophets" born 1943-1960, must be elected to lead us through this period.

  • Winter's Coming for the Boomers: Part 2 [View article]
Having read Strauss and Howe extensively looking for clues ( for investment purposes) to where we are going next in the "turnings", your post is most interesting. I do not totally agree with your idea about peak oil, but for now that seems to be a most plausible catalyst for the "crisis" along with the financial mess. As you likely know Howe believes the current leadership in Washington is the start of the "fourth turning", but in the prior two Fourth Turnings never has a "Nomad" lead during this period of history. Obama is obviously a "Nomad" generationally, so that does not fit. However every time we have entered the serious phase of the crisis a "Prophet" has led, so maybe your point about another one taking over in 2012 is on the point. So for the "generational theory" of Strauss and Howe to be correct it is almost required that we have new leadership in 2012 or 2016, or the whole "generational turnings" theory just up in smoke, or we end the the crisis in badly. No other way can this play out.

  • CNBC's Gasparino Problem [View article]
Speaking of wingnuts on CNBC, the problem on CNBC is John Harwood who can not open his mouth without expressing his own agenda. You can never get an accurate report from Harwood without some advocacy of his agenda.
