  • How Long Will the Bear Market Last? [View article]
Tan pulled some bad historical figures from his head. Look 'em up (for the DJIA) - the bear market following the '29 crash ended with the mid-year 1932 bull pop (peaked up 78% in Sept. from the low in July), though . The '29 was reached again in 1954, not 1958 as he says. The 1968 peak was not the high through 1992(!), it was eclipsed in 1973, again in 1976, again in 1981, again in 1982, and the LOW of the market was higher than the 1968 high from 1983 onward.

It is pretty negative thinking to declare that we've been in a bear market since 2000 just because the market hasn't eclipsed that high mark again. The S&P and Nasdaq more than doubled from the bottom in 2002 to mid-2007 (and the DJIA came very close), a bull market by anyone's definition.
