  • Today's Employment Report: Focus on the Long Term Trends [View article]
Currently, we're going down the road copying the Western European socialist economies. Unless these clowns are voted out of office we stuck in a high unemployment world. This situation suits the leftist poliitians just fine. Regardless how you feel we need a new "Reagan" now.

  • Eight Restaurants with the Right Recipe for Lean Times [View article]
PF Chang's has also introduced a new line of lower cost Asian style restaurants called Pei Wei. I went to one that just opened in our city - same food as PF Chang with smaller menu, much faster service, but not lower cost.

  • Cap and Trade Would Sink the U.S. Economy [View article]
The global warming advocates may be correct in their assumptions, but the Cap and Trade for the U.S. will not lower CO2 emissions in our planet one iota. We decrease emissions; the developing world more than emits what we reduce. There will be a net increase in CO2 emissions in the world as a whole no matter what the U.S. does.

  • IndexIQ Launches Two Inflation Hedge ETFs [View article]
What I don't like about GRES is their 2X short positions on the SP500 and EAFE. It works fine for one to two day intervals, but not a several day or several week or more time frame. I'm disappointed that they're using those leveraged short ETFs when the unleveraged would probably work better.

I like your strategy. I assume you buy and sell your equity portion the same way you handle bonds.

  • IndexIQ's New ETFs Offer Investors Two Ways to Hedge Against Inflation [View article]
The ETF - GRES is a very interesting concept...to be successful though, during a period of rising inflation, coupled with a stock market sell-off, the commodity stocks will have to have a relative performance advantage over the SP500. I'll have to do the research on this before I buy in on GRES.

  • Rethinking Portfolio Plans Based on Views of Inflation  [View article]
To hedge my bets, my anti-inflation strategy will be 1/2 commodities (heavy on oil-related investments) and 1/2 TIPs. Our govts. economic policy will result in a slower growth scenario which will probably slow down the advent of inflation but it will happen one way or another.

  • The Hypocrisy and High Stakes of Healthcare Reform [View article]
I read a NY Times article on Canadian health care system in which readers from Canada wrote in and stated that they prefer their system 10 to 1. I was surprised; but then found out that their system does not have enough specialists (too costly) so the Canadian govt. pays those that need specialists to travel to the U.S. and will pay 100% of their costs. The problem is what happens when we adopt a Canadian style health care system when our too costly specialists disappear? Where do we send our patients?

    From Sether:
"You can argue that America has the best Health Care in the world. That's at least debatable. However, millions of people cannot get it, or cannot get enough of it. Health Care reform will allow people to GET that 'great' health care."
The problem is when those extra "millions of people" access our system will it still be the "best in the world"?

  • Warren Buffett Reminds Us: The U.S. Economic System Still Works And Has A Bright Future [View article]
The only problem is how much stronger the U.S. would be today if we didn't have an anti-capitalist, anti-business govt. which will soon inflict upon us a much higher tax regime? A real tragedy for the U.S. in the making. Sure we'll get rid of Democratic control in 2 to 4 yrs but a lot of the damage will be irrevesible.
Buffett is a Democrat because he is a person of immense wealth who doesn't want to appear to greedy or insenitive to the needs of others (which I think is misplaced).
