<title>How did BP's (BP +2.2%) surprising Q1 results catch analysts so off guard? Improved production at the Tangguh LNG project in Indonesia plus strong LNG prices in Asia likely helped BP earn more from gas trading, estimated by Bernstein analysts at an extra $400M. Refinery availability was over 95%, enabling BP to maximize the benefit from higher refining margins, adding another $300M to Q1 profit.</title>

<title>"I wish I hadn't bought Newsweek. It was a mistake," says InterActiveCorp (IACI -0.3%) chairman Barry Diller, who just resigned from TripAdvisor's board. IAC's Newsweek Daily Beast JV has been an albatross for the company, as it tries to get the business to turn a profit while shifting to an all-digital model. Diller also claims TV broadcasters are trying to use Congress to shut down IAC-backed Aereo, and suggests Aereo could start offering additional content if it reaches 10M-20M subs (that could take a while); the service will arrive in Boston in May. (more on Aereo)</title>

<title>Paul Krugman: "The austerity agenda looks a lot like a simple expression of upper-class preferences, wrapped in a facade of academic rigor. What the top 1% wants becomes what economic science says we must do." Ken Langone responds: Runaway deficits are the older generation "stealing" from the young, and Paul Krugman has never met a payroll and doesn't have to worry about profit margins.</title>

<title>The New York Times' (NYT) flagship paper is suffering from a crisis in the newsroom with support fading rapidly for executive editor Jill Abramson, according to Politco. In a biting article, more than a dozen current and former staffers unloaded on the exec with unflattering comments. Earlier this week, the company unveiled plans to build franchises around NYT brands, though it's somewhat unclear if the big picture includes Abramson.</title>

<title>Trouble is brewing ahead of BP's (BP -0.7%) annual shareholder meeting tomorrow, with some investors planning to &amp;shy;protest the pay and performance of chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg. But with the protest taking the form of abstentions rather than outright "nos," the votes likely will go BP&amp;rsquo;s way. Meanwhile, BP&amp;rsquo;s share price remains 30% lower than it was before the 2010 Gulf oil spill.</title>

The Japanese auto maker said a lithium-ion battery pack used in its i-MiEV model electric car caught fire while charging during a test inspection at a company plant in Okayama last week, while in another incident, a battery installed in one of its Outlander PHEV hybrids overheated, melting the cell and part of the battery pack.</title>

<title>Nomura's incorrigible bear Bob Janjuah says S&amp;amp;P to dip 5-10% in Q2 before hitting new nominal highs in Q3. Janjuah remains "as convinced as ever" that bullishness will "come under extreme pressure" late in the year. For now he recommends "getting short risk at a S&amp;amp;P level of 1550 &amp;hellip; looking for a move down to 1450."</title>

<title>"What we are witnessing is the slow death of the European project," says Athanasios Orphanides, former Central Bank of Cyprus Governor. What we have, he says, are decisions being taken in Germany sequentially spreading misery to the periphery, and now it's blackmailed the Cypriot government into confiscating its citizens deposits. No one in a small or weak country should feel safe.</title>

<title>Little Cyprus is bringing a dangerous new variable into the European bailout crisis, warns Dennis Gartman - the Russian mafia. "Everybody knows that the vast majority of the deposits in Cyprus are from Russia," Gartman says. "They're Russian government officials, they're Russian businessmen, it's Russian mafia &amp;ndash; and you don't mess with the Russian mafia." He calls the eurozone demand over the weekend absolute "lunacy on the part of the European monetary authorities."</title>

<title>"You should be investigated." "No, you should." That's about the gist of the latest exchanges between Bill Ackman and Herbalife (HLF -0.7%). Ackman yesterday backed a call from the National Consumers League to probe the company for possibly being a pyramid scheme. Herbalife responds by accusing Ackman of making "a reckless $1B bet against the company based on knowingly false statements."</title>

<title>Illinois has become only the second state to be accused of securities fraud, with the SEC saying that it misled bond investors from 2005-2009 about the ever-worsening condition of its public workers' retirement plans by claiming that it was properly funding the scheme when it wasn't. However, while Illinois has agreed to a cease-and-desist order, it has escaped any fines and it hasn't had to admit any wrongdoing. (PR)</title>

<title>Steve Jacobs, Las Vegas Sands' (LVS) former top executive in Macau, has made further allegations against Sheldon Adelson in a recent court filing, accusing LVS's CEO of ordering Jacobs to threaten Edmund Ho, the then-head of the region's government. While the nature of the threat isn't specified, Jacobs, who's suing LVS for wrongful termination, was told to remind Ho how Adelson had helped him out with a $40M lawsuit.</title>
