  • AT&T: When High Yield Can Trump Dividend Growth [View article]
I think that many DG people will, to one degree or another, have a mixture of high growth / high yield in their portfolios. I have no problem holding T. It's about 7% of our div holdings with a 6.5% YOC. I consider it a core holding that helps a bit with stability. The dividend increases are indeed small, but I view them as a little extra gravy on my meat and potatoes.

So, I guess you hate AT&T and retirees. You are also suspicious of many of those who post here. Thanks for taking the time to make us all aware of these things.

  • How To Lower Risk And Build A Margin Of Safety [View article]
    GLF:
I suppose it depends on the reason for the price drop. Truly poor financials are one thing. On the other hand, PEP dropped well over 30% from peak during the 2008/09 panic. It had little to do with financial results. Maybe I misunderstand your point, but I sure wish I had purchased PEP after that drop.

And I feel compelled to say that I think you are being a bit harsh. Disagreeing with an author is one thing. Telling him to go away and write book reports seems rather insulting.

Well, let me just thanks for the insults to my intelligence, folks. It's so nice to be judged by people that know nothing about me. I thought SA was a better place than that, but I was wrong.

For the record, I'm quite technically savvy. My rejection of a smartphone comes from a personal cost/benefit analysis. Even though that means I'll never be as awesome as you, it's just a burden I'll have to bear.

For User and TxGolfer, I respectfully request that you avoid commenting to me in the future. I have no use for your misguided and sarcastic comments.

  • Saying Goodbye To Coca-Cola, Time To Move On [View article]
I know very little about Dollar General. All I have to know is that it doesn't pay a dividend. It seems to me that KO and DG don't belong in the same article. Kind of a different investor mentality for each one.

DG seems like a trading stock. KO is about 8% of our portfolio and I keep it as part of our core holdings. It can be a sloth at times, but I feel that the div will just keep on coming. Exactly what I'm looking for in a core holding.

  • Dividend Growth Stocks Perfect For Retirees - Part 3 [View article]
    Hi Jacob:
I agree with Norman. With div stocks it is all about the income, not necessarily price appreciation, though sometimes you get both. Dividends are far from being a sham. They are real cash in your pocket. And as far as the the dividend being "a wash", this is only true if you sell the stock. Otherwise, the dividends just keep flowing and with the right stocks, they get bigger over the years.

Taxes are present whether through dividends or capital gains. I don't let the tax tail wag the investing dog. My wife and I also own our dividend stocks inside Roth accounts so no matter what we collect in dividends it will be zero tax liability. As DW and I enter retirement we can hopefully look forward to an increasing stream of tax-free dividend income.

It sounds like you want growth and capital gains rather than income. More power to you. When you get close to retirement though, you may start to re-think that.

I have to honestly say that I haven't the slightest clue what you are talking about. No offense, but I'm thinking I'll stick with more simplistic numbers like yield and payout ratio.

  • AT&T Gets Very Direct [View article]
As an investor, I think that all the consolidation that's being attempted is a good thing. As a consumer, I don't think this will end well. The more control and dominance they have, the worse it is for the consumer.

As for Aereo, I suspect they will be dead in the water within a year unless they change their business model.
