  • Mike Shedlock says he's sick of refuting 'green shoots nonsense': "In simple terms, things are getting worse at a lesser rate, but they are light years away from being any good." To wit, initial claims may, or may not, have peaked - but the peak in unemployment is nowhere close.  [View news story]
Green shoots is a meaningless term at this point. Why use it?

  • Why dividends matter: Historically, dividends are responsible for about half of the stock market's total return. Yet by 2000, their slice of the pie plunged to just 10%. Meager dividends could significantly delay any full recovery.  [View news story]
The thing that's really awful about Cetin is that he's probably some Berkeley undergrad who thinks what he is doing is satire in the Colbert vein but doesn't know enough about the subject to actually pull it off. A joke repeated doesn't make a joke any better.

He'd tell you to just buy the dips (and in companies that are leaders in their industry circa 2006). Forever and ever and ever. Theres no strategy beyond buy buy buy. And for him to watch SA like a hawk so he can post that message again and again and again is sad and ridiculous.

  • Socially responsible investors line up behind unions: A group of 26 pension and mutual funds that invest in social causes and represent $372B in assets have urged Congress to support legislation making it easier for workers to join unions.  [View news story]
The language of the bill is quite clear. Non anonymous voting on unionization leads to the obvious ability to coerce people to join unions.

  • As investors regain their taste for risk, emerging markets are getting a boost, with stocks up 50% since the beginning of March. Optimists argue the worst of the global crisis has passed and China's stimulus plans will lift demand for commodities and agriculture.  [View news story]
The biggest issue is what happens to the appetite if the risk bites back.
