  • Points Off for Windows? Assailing the 'Macs Are More Expensive' Assumption [View article]
    Then again...
I would actually say the "lazy" people are the ones that buy a PC just based on the sticker price.

If you thought about it, worked out the TCO, looked at the actual parts (ie not all memory is the same.. not all hard disk manufacturers are equal..) you could make a better informed decision.

    @ levin70

Its like why a "lazy" person buys a Porsche Boxter with Tiptronic vs a Chrysler Cross Fire with stickshift.

You buy what meets your spec..
Not everyone can self build a PC..
Not everyone wants to pay monthly subscription to AVG.
    The list goes on..

Actually... this ancedotal.. but I work with a lot of techies.. a lot of them have Macbooks and Macbook Pros.. what does that tell you?

I spoke to them and apart from the UNIX driving OS X.. the support guys say the last thing they want to do when they get home is to "support" their own system.

Where as the programmers.. they dont want any downtime... to them time is money.

  • Why is Microsoft Tepid in Its March to Cloud Computing? [View article]
You can either sell a product outright or rent it...

For example, the record companies used to sell singles and albums. effectively pricing it so it was economical to buy the album. They hated the fact that online stores wanted to sell singles only (I mean, come on, they even wanted to charge something close to the physical album at a lower sound quality!)

Then there was a push for subscription models.

What Redmond is trying to do is find a new income stream.

For example, for my home computer I have bought various copies of MS Office, but only 4 versions over the last 15 odd years. ie only when I get a new computer.

If, I was to subscribe to MS Office "cloud", that would prove to be an ongoing cost. Albeit a relatively small price per month, but accrued over say a few years, likely substantially more than my own copy of Office. There will also be hidden costs... well, you need an internet connection! I know most people have one, but if you are travelling, your mobile or roaming charges are going to burden you.
