    In the SSX senario, often lower grades must be mined out to get to the better grades. The ore veins are often variable in grade quality which impacts milled concentrates.

    The Carajas deposit was known to be a magnetic anomaly region for anyone flying over the area. Geologists from the then US Steel investigated the deposit and determined it a world class deposit; but USS could not acquire a leasehold from the Brazilian government as resource nationalism was practiced even then.

    Clearly the risk to future revenue from copper is the concern. Acquiring significant reserves in natural gas will provide future growth opportunities when the US becomes a net exporter at overseas prices.

    After a year of widening the open pit at Grasberg and mining low grade copper ore, they should be in good position to begin mining the higher qrade ores for a while, impacting their cash flow. Long-term the company is preparing itself to meet future demands, which right now the industry cannot keep.

    The media can always find ways of reporting a biased story based on selected sources, in this case-emails. In this case the NYT is taking a page from FOX. I've never known reporters from major news sources to be experts when reporting about energy or the understanding of how things work. Shale gas is difficult to extract the reason for many wells using latest fracking and horizontal drilling to expose more potential reservoir to the drill. One well does not make a play in this geologic setting.
