  • Wells Fargo (WFC +1.3%) says its top four executive officers (including CEO John Stumpf) won't get cash bonuses, but will rather receive restricted shares that vest in three years, are tied to performance goals, must be held as long as the execs are with the bank and are forfeited if they leave the company.  [View news story]
Why doesn't the board just stop the circus and outsource the management of the bank for a tenth of the cost with no bonuses or other perks ? They would probably do a much better job of it ! Let these bums go !

  • David Rosenberg predicts heightened volatility in 2010, as the VIX creeps back up to the 30-40 range. He says investors have become complacent in a hurry, as witnessed by the low cost of buying index puts, and thinks sovereign risk could be one of the big stories next year: "Whatever bad assets that have been resolved in this credit crisis have almost entirely been placed on the books of governments and central banks."  [View news story]

  • A quarter of U.S. households don't have access to full banking services, while nine million of those households have no checking or savings at all, the FDIC says in a new report (.pdf). Those households - which depend on payday loans or other "problem" alternative services - face more loss and theft, and struggle for financial security, the agency says.  [View news story]

  • Meanwhile, an unnamed IEA whistleblower says the agency - under pressure from the U.S. - is deliberately underplaying a looming shortage for fear of triggering panic buying. In 2005, IEA predicted supplies could rise to 120M b/d by 2030, but that fell to 105M last year (where it remains), and insiders believe maintaining production of even 90-95M b/d "would be impossible." • Fannie Mae (FNM) plans to tap emergency funds for a fourth time this year, bringing its draws of taxpayer money to $60B. According to an SEC filing late yesterday, Fannie will seek $15B in Treasury financing after posting an $18.9B Q3 net loss. Analysts say the GSE will likely tap its entire $200B lifeline, and may still need more.  [View news story]
No problem, we'll just work the presses overtime. The analysts don't care and neither does the market. So why bother. It's all a facade. It seems like the market is being played by a bunch of kindergarten kids who think its all a big game without any consequences.

  • Nouriel Roubini says Jim Rogers' forecast of $2,000 gold is "utter nonsense." Speaking at the Inside Commodities conference, Roubini repeated that asset prices have gone up "too much, too soon, too fast," and said oil hasn't gone from $30 to $80 just on supply and demand. Predictably, Rogers doesn't agree: "It’s clear Mr. Roubini hasn’t done his homework, yet again." (previously)  [View news story]
