Will be interesting to see result of Martin-Marietta's hostile takeover attempt. Large block shareholders are resisting and Vulcan is aggressively lowering their cost structure.

My observations regard how VMC fits into the marketplace against their competitors. While the other large (foreign) vertically integrated material companies are saddled with huge debt load from ill-timed acquisitions, VMC didn't make those mistakes, and is now buying at bargain prices, with the intent to increase revenue for their cement plant. A note: Their major acquisition, Florida Rock Industries, drew a large percentage of its income from fuel tankers. VMC's business model in Alabama-Ga was construction aggregates, while the Florida Rock acquisition is cement, concrete, and aggregates. VMC is replicating the Florida model in Alabama and Ga, and consolidating the ready mix industry into fewer players. I think they will achieve profitability sooner than their competitors - how soon I don't know. But while others are dumping assets, VMC is aggressively expanding.

presently vmc is buying concrete companies in georgia to get more outlet for newly expanded cement plant in north florida. expect vmc to see revenue increases as construction recovers slowly through 2013. if you are patient, this well-run company is a good long IMO.
