Alternative Energy Storage: It's All About Price vs. Performance

Interesting mechanical means of storing energy were ignored except for a flywheel. weird to me! Pumping water from a low elevation to a high elevation during excess energy production seems logical to me. A deep verticle shaft (hole with a weight suspended above the shaft would be a good way to store energy by raising the weight when having excess energy and lowering it to release energy. Both would probably be more effective storage mechanisms than chemical reactions.
