  • Dividend Yield 7.5%, P/E 8.1: Consider Seagate Technology  [View article]
Thanks Arie for your thorough analysis. I have owned STX since 2012 for the dividend (now over 10% on my cost) and prospects of increasing sales due to cloud storage, along with DLR. But I have been concerned about the price decline. Looks like it might be time to buy a little more soon?

  • Responding To Reader Requests On Annaly Capital Management  [View article]
One term not explained in this article is "specialness" Sometimes things are mentioned in the conference calls as having a quality of being "special."
    Not sure what this means.
I enjoy your articles very much!

  • My Notes On Annaly Capital Management's Q3 Earnings Call  [View article]
However, management did say in the earnings call that they are now providing more detailed information for investors in order to increase transparency.
I don't know whether this additional detail is anything that you would call useful, but it made me think that NLY has been following your SA articles and has responded!

  • Pros And Cons Of The American Capital Agency Switch To Monthly Dividends  [View article]
Actually AGNC saves money on dividend payouts by giving only 1/3 of the quarterly dividend at the end of October instead of the whole amount. In other words, they are postponing the other 2/3 of the dividend payout one to two months! This doesn't seem to bode well for the present state of operation of the company!

  • Recent Spin-Off Knowles Is An Opportunity Worth Investigating  [View article]
I would have kept it if there had been indications in the presentation by management after the spinoff that they would be initiating a dividend sometime in the future. Not even mentioned! So, I sold and will leave the stock to other investors.

PTI: Really appreciate your transparency. Very few authors of SA articles actually state the value of their holdings, so that I hope your article will start a trend.

  • Selling Begets Selling: Shorting Junk Bonds As Bond Market Dislocations Continue  [View article]
Any comments about Vanguard's supposedly conservative junk bond funds? I have had VWEHX or VWEAX for almost 9 years and while the dividend has slowly gone down 20% in recent years due to lower interest rates as the portfolio turns over, it still returns to me about 5.5% today. I've kept it for income and expect that as interest rates climb the dividend will gradually increase somewhat.
In any case, even though the share price now has dropped 6-7% from what I paid for it long ago, the dividends have paid back about 70% of my original investment. Maybe a JNJ or MCD would eventually throw off more income with safety and price appreciation, but this fund seems to me to be a useful asset in an income portfolio. Comments?

  • BDC Risk Profiles: Part 8 - Credit Quality  [View article]
Enjoy your articles, and after reading this one about credit quality, I wonder how you would compare BDCs in general with junk bond funds, as it seems to me that the quality of holdings in both could be similar? Or do BDCs have generally better or worse credit quality in their holdings? I own MAIN, TCAP and TCRD and am considering adding more.
    Thanks!

  • Don't Be Manipulated By Price And Valuations  [View instapost]
Enjoy your articles and comments much!
I've been reluctant to buy MLPs because of the dreaded K-1s that come at tax time. I've had KMP for a while now and it's done great. But supposedly when the returns of capital reduce the basis to 0 it's necessary to start paying taxes on them even if you continue to hold the stock. I'm wondering how you handle these situations but suppose you may just let a CPA do it for you??
