  • What to Expect from Nortel in '09 [View article]
It amazes me that people still believe that product excellence will resurrect this company! It is foolish to believe that the management team that created this mess will be the one to fix it. In the high tech world once a major company falls behind the pack it can never catch up. At best NT will devolve to a microcosm of its former self and play in some little niche while the herd moves on. And no one but a nostalgic few will know because NT's stock will not be traded on any major exchange.

  • Despite Recent Woes, Nortel Opens New Office in Nigeria [View article]
NortelEmployee: You've got to be kidding. NT closed today at
$0.42 US. Interestingly enough that's exactly the same price that I purchased it about 8 yrs ago when it was also in the cellar. The only difference is a 1for10 reverse split since then. If everyone in NT would stop babbling about technology, and instead get on the dollars & cents, gaining market share, beating competitors, establishing a sustainable differential advantage, then you might get somewhere. However, I personally think its too late.

  • Nortel Cuts Few Jobs Than Expected; Four Senior Executives Depart [View article]
NT Corporate during the great acquisition phase became infatuated with a complicated matrix organizational structure that continued with centralized R&D control and geographical sales organizations that reported to corporate instead of the line units. A bloated, non-responsive, corporate structure resulted that engendered finger-pointing and ownership of issues and profitability by no one. All in the name of efficiency improvement. One must ask simple questions like "Who is responsible for the profitability of that product?" and "Who is responsible for growing market share in that line of business?" All the matrix can think about is how big is the next restructuring plan. In business as in nature if you're not growing then you're dying, there is no steady state.

Looks like the new reorg gives them the same organization that NT had in the mid-80s.
