The Changes to the Dow: Goodbye GM and Citi, Hello Cisco and Travelers [View article]
Cisco is about as "industrial" as you can get when it comes to making the backbone of the Internet and Corporate networks work. Complaining that an Industrial Index includes too much tech is missing the point. Even traditional "Industrial" companies like 3M are all about tech and innovation. It seems odd to differentiate types of tech and innovation on such narrow grounds. Industrial seems better applied as behind the scenes making things work as compared to point product consumer businesses. You actually argue for Visa in place of Cisco when Visa really isn't Industrial by your standards either. It looks apparent that DJ takes the broader view of what Industrial is which is just a sign of the times for the role of high-tech in our economy.
DJIA Components: Are Changes Imminent? [View article]
I know Cisco gets tagged as Tech, but it is still Industrial. Just as you need Caterpillar equipment to move dirt and build infrastructure for roads, you need Cisco equipment to move packets and create the infrastructure of the Internet. Considering the significance of the Internet to the economy, Cisco's already bellwether status, their impeccable corporate governance, Cisco should be in the DJIA.
Yes, I am Long CSCO if it is added to the DJIA or not....
Finally, an article about Cisco's cash that is accurate. Now if the government would allow repatriation of cash without taxes during this crisis, Cisco wouldn't have to tap the bond market. It seems like it might be worthwhile to forego the taxes if it means that the cash will come home to be spent.
Time for Cisco to Make Some Acquisitions? [View article]
Cisco already OEMs some gear from Polycom. Why buy the company to claim what little margins are left on the Polycom side. Polycom isn't a big player outside of their OEM devices. Also, Cisco has a full line of VoIP products for SMB all the way up through Enterprise. There isn't much of a product gap if any that needs to be filled with an acquisition in voice.

Well, he doesn't start until April.... Looks like IBM blocked him from working for Apple for 6 months. Seems like it is worth more than the paper it was written on.

The mini really needs to have two significant models. Apple really does need a more limited configuration available at a cheaper price point. It also needs a high-end configuration with architectural improvements (perhaps the new quad core processors) to be used in hosting and other commercial/enterprise environments. Jumping from the mini to the Mac Pro is way too big of a gap in the product portfolio if you don't want a display.

You can't get a Lenovo or Dell that is the same. Not only can they not run Mac OS X without hacking the machines, but they are not up to the same level of quality or reliability. Are you just upset because your a PC?
Most people that want and Apple that have a hard time affording one will typically wait until they can get one rather than going out and buying more PC crap.
How the iPhone and Poor Management Contribute to Apple's Downfall [View article]
Jgonion hit it on the head perfectly. The last thing we want is for Apple to break the law to raise the share price. That tends to not work in the long run. The subscription accounting also has the benefit of Apple recognizing revenue for past iPhone sales during this downturn. While AAPL shares would have shot up more with the non-subscription accounting, they would have fallen further if Apple delivered worse numbers without the support of the past sales. I'm sure there numbers will speak for themselves without the armchair quarterbacking of the media.

I'm not sure why they would be wanting to only keep the portion of their business that puts them in direct competition with Cisco. They need an exit strategy from the Enterprise IMHO.
Apple and Macworld: The End of an Era or Two [View article]
I like what one reporter said about this mess... "It is MacWorld Expo and not Steve Jobs that is on its last legs." Steve will probably even be on stage for part of the keynote. I wouldn't be surprised if he showed up for "one more thing".
NeoTheta hit the nail on the head. Also, Apple typically reserves inventory for their own stores/website since they make more money doing so. I looked yesterday and all of the core iPods, Macs, etc were all shipping in 24 hours. Having the retailers that our discounting Apple's products running out is fine as long as it drives the customers to Apple's stores/website to still make the sell. I guess folks forget that this happens every year and every major product release. ;)
Apple vs. Microsoft Vista: The Ad Budget Wars [View article]
Yet another blogger throwing around words they do not understand. Apple's products are by no means perfect. However, when a new product or update has defects they are usually pretty quick to provide a fix. The ad is not about the amount spent on advertising alone.
Microsoft should spend the $300 million on sustaining to fix vista defects. I'm sure they are spending quite a bit on it already, but the extra $300 million wouldn't hurt.
I suspect you know all of this and are just pulling a Dvorak.

Cisco (CSCO) should be added the DJIA. It is about as close to "Industrial" as you can get with any tech firm. They will be selling the gear that powers the Internet for a long time to come. Their performance, and outstanding level of financial transparency should put them into serious consideration.
