  • Penn West Cuts Distribution, But Does Management Have Any Credibility? [View article]
obviously they are not weaving ANY GARMENTS OF INVISISBLE TRUST AS WOULD BERKSHIRE DO,,,HOPEFULLY THEY WILL LEARN FROM THEIR lack of credibility and ethically challenged ways!
Me thinks they are reconsidering cuts by other Canadian Oil Trusts such as PVX and want to follow their example.....yes but what motive?
    Greed me thinks!

Prescient : Dubious vs jegan's Absolutely .... been in the oil patch 45 years and I'll go with Prescient's Quite Dubious! Doesn't anybody realize how much NG it takes to get a bbl of oil from the oil(its API=tar!) sands!!!...perhaps the comment

" Buying oil sands (COSWK.PK) makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE right now because the price of oil needs to be much higher than it is now to justify the high costs of extracting. In comparison, PWE has mostly conventional oil wells, where costs of extracting is lower. "

most aptly sums it up here!

The author failed to mention that PVX has already posted a rate cut (from .10-.11./month to .09 Canadian) due to the condition of the market.....also that PWE will hold steady until February...he(the author) hasn't done his homework........

  • Canadian Royalty Trusts in Need of an American Revolution [View article]
I believe Mr. Ward is on the right track here. While I had plenty of good critiques in his previous Nov 24th article in this one I find him to be on the money so to speak however getting governments to reduce or change taxation is a daunting task. Obama's election machine works on grass roots so Mr. Ward's exhortations might work ..here's hoping they do

  • Canadian Royalty Trusts Will Never Return to Their Former Glory [View article]
My question is "Might you not have influential ties who may gain from your doom and gloom article"? ie future shorts or PUTS?
Or are you just totally Bearish on the Canadian Oil Trusts..you fail to mention US oil trusts such as BPT and Mexico Oil Trusts in their UMS bonds which by the way seen a size able increase in Price???? BPT has shown a huge drop in production ie from 400,000 to 300,000 bbl of oil per day in less than 13 months(I don't see BPT stock at sub basement prices like the Conroys see BPT$74/share vs PWE $13.60/share now vs BPT $108/share and PWE's $35/share this spring-summer 2008).
As an oilman a 25% drop in production over 13 months time especially at the end of its projected production era is far more terrifying than the prospects of future questionable tax burdens under any circumstances...so why aren't shares of BPT dropping??? Congressman Markey's (D. Mass.) proposal to cancel the withholding credit currently enjoyed by US investors is not a certainty nor do you know for a fact that the Obama folks will even act on it remember they put Richardson as Commerce secretary, and he’s shown a lot of conservative taxing ideals in the past….

You failed to mention PVX I wonder why????? Could it be that they have allready taken many of the measures you suggested including getting and developing new oil plays like regular E & P companies????

carrying costs of the asset base ah ha your estimations are a little off not to mention each Conroy's conventional cost of prodution /bbl of oil...
I'd refute your estimations of total cost of productions like $35 not to mention $40/bbl > I used to be in the US business and our costs were $10-$25 max and having worked with Canadian oilmen I don't think US oilmen were any smarter or more heavily taxed remember the Windfall profit tax in the 80's well that above $20-$25 includes that burden.....
