Imports could only partially fill the gap. 90% of the jobs that would be created in the meantime would be in Eastern Europe or Asia. On the other hand, it would touch off a depression that would affect everybody - maybe even you in your cushy Economist job!

The increase in volume is mainly due to people from out of town buying up foreclosure properties on a purely speculative basis. They are seduced by the low prices, but what they are getting are shells of homes that can only be sold as fixer uppers.
