  • Will the U.S. Fight the German Car Invasion? [View article]
I continue to marvel at the completely undeserved reputation VW has for something akin to reliability and/or quality....they consistently perform year in and year out well below industry average...and yet their vehicles list at a signifcant premium for their feature content and horsepower....I guess these fawning 30 something's just can't past what they think is cool. I owned two VWs in my life and they were nothing but trouble. I'll keep my American metal.

  • A Modest Proposal For The U.S. Auto Industry: Stop Building Cars [View article]
More B school hogwash....how long do you think Dell and Apple will be in business as "designers" and "innovators" while no longer understanding how to manufacture? What makes you think Chinese and Indian manufactuers can't design for cheaper too? Toyota is not successful due to scale, but due to making relatively good cars and trucks under the complete protection of their home government which provides its workers with national health care and protects its home market by shutting out imports. I'm also tired of hearing how "nobody buys GM cars/trucks"...even though there are 70 million on the road in the US alone and another 70 million oustide the US. Another important factor to remember is that automobile manufacturing is infinitely more complex that simple Ipod and PC manufacturing....I still get PO'd over why my car starts everytime and is ready to drive in seconds while my PC needs to "boot up" for more than 5 minutes...what a joke....if anything PCs have gotten slower. Finally, manufacturing is core to national defense...try sending a soldier into combat w/an ipod and a laptop.
