  • Many iPhone/iPad users aren't happy with Apple's (AAPL) new Maps app, which displaces Google Maps (GOOG) with today's iOS 6 launch. The loss of Street View and public transit data is frustrating many, as are the search results. Even Apple die-hard John Gruber is a critic. The discontent is unlikely to convince Apple to have a change of heart, but it could drive many users to opt for Google's home-grown iOS Maps release (likely to feature ads) when it arrives ... provided Apple doesn't block it. I agree it's useless on a phone, but I use it often on my laptop.

You win some features and you lose some features. Have you tried the GPS feature yet? Any feedback would be great.

That is a very narrow view that you have and it is wrong to assume other people share the same view.

The Maps app has been a very useful too for me when I don't have my Garmin GPS with me. It's especially great for walking in a city environment for finding businesses. Don't forget that you can zoom in and out. Even with the 3.5" screen, it has never held me back from using the app.

  • Apple: US Carriers Ensure Short-Term Success [View article]
Earnings announcements don't exactly occur on the first business day of the next month, but that's ok.

I actually added a large position at 3:50 on the afternoon of earnings, yielding a huge gain. Many analysts who write for CNBC, WSJ, Bloomberg, and of course, Seeking Alpha, used earnings from AT&T and Verizon to see a slowdown of iPhone sales in the US. But it isn't about the US. They had such a narrow view of the global market that they failed to realized that sales overseas would have a profound effect on sales.

The same result will occur with the iPhone 5 as it is released in many countries simultaneously in about 34 hours. What you feel is irrational is exactly how other people behave in spending $650 + tax on a mobile phone. This is what millions of people are doing right now, making it an event to line up at a glass structure, to overpay for a device, handing over hard earned money to a pimpled kid making $11/hour, and feeling good about it.

Are you here to make money? I think you are. My advice to you is not to fight it. Embrace the trend. This is what people are doing. Understand that your way of thinking is not the same as these millions of Apple junkies.

It's not too late to take on a larger position.

Let me ask you a question and please give an honest answer-

Are you one of the people that trashed the stock prior to the April quarterly earnings report?

Not everyone is as pragmatic as you. People dig deep to get their hands on the latest iOS devices. They risk going to jail by performing criminal acts- armed robbery, ramming a car through their local Apple store, and murder. Some would even sell a kidney, just to get an iPhone or an iPad. Again, that's what makes AAPL such a wonderful stock to own. Until I see signs of that changing, I'm riding this one up and taking profits along the way.

I take you back to my point of "needs" vs. "wants". Isn't it wonderful that the company you are investing in makes people who cannot afford an iPhone buy an iPhone?

I'm not sure if the stock's dynamics will change as Apple plowed through the Great Recession unscathed. Now that there are several price points for iPhones, I would not be too concerned in the near term that a competitor will steal the show. Used phones are also a great option.

One thing that you may or may not have overlooked is the iPad. As a market leader by a great margin, the iPad synergies alongside any iOS device usually locks in the consumer. How often do you see someone with an iPad and an Android phone? I'm sure there are some, but the familiarity and cross functioning devices makes 1+1=2+. The value proposition is worth the additional marginal purchasing price.

This writer is bulish on AAPL with long positions and ITM calls.

PS- my advice to you is $250 a year is not worth it to break your back. A few co-pays at the chiropractor's office will break even, not to mention the time and marginal amount of gas you save hauling the 50 gallons per week. Wouldn't you rather be golfing? Sometimes, you just need to let someone make a buck at your expense. The big picture in all of this is you're saving 1/3 a share of AAPL while you're holding several thousand shares that will go up to $1,000 in 6 months! And you're hauling water???

I agree with the old iPod software. I was lost using it! I preferred copying and pasting my music on a generic mp3 player eventhough it was uglier. Later I realized the I was just not saavy with the itunes and should have used the tutorial to make life easier. Now, it's a breeze and it does make organizing music easier.

By this Friday, the iPhone 4 will be free with a contract. It is more phone than you can get with an Android phone at the same price point. You mention buying the cost of buying the phone outright and using a prepaid service. It is true that buying the iPhone outright is more expensive than a Nokia or Samsung, but not all consumers can comprehend the long run savings as you can. Liek someone mentioned about cable tv, consumers just accept these high monthly charges cuz they're used to it.

I appreciate your analysis on the various phones, but you are not just up against hardware feature vs. feature for each phone. The way iOS just simply "works" is priceless. Also, don't discount the consumers' "needs" vs. "wants". This is what makes AAPL such a great investment.

And what is your point for iPhones not being actually free? Are decent Android phones free without a contract? You need to compare apples to apples. Which free contract phone can compare to an iPhone 4? Which $100 Android phone can compare to the iPhone 4S. This new product cycle will corner the smartphone market for mid to high end.

Please think through your arguments before spewing it on the internet.

How is the iPhone overpriced compared to flagship Android phones produced by Samsung? Apple has available their older models for free or $100 to cover competitors' lower end phones.

There's also more to just SIM capability with the iPhone vs. iPod.
