  • North Dakota to require every barrel of crude oil be filtered [View news story]
What about the guys that haul gasoline? Maybe the next step is to remove the volatiles from refined fuels?

  • Charlie Munger Thinks Oil Is Absolutely Certain To Become Incredibly Short In Supply [View article]
Brazil deep water oil is very, very expensive to produce. And of course, it's in Brazil, which has control of Petrobras.

  • Jim Cramer chooses MLPs Kinder Morgan Partners (KMP) and Enterprise Products Partners (EPD) as antidotes to potential froth in the broader stock market. Cramer likes KMP's strategic acquisitions during recent years and is bullish on its outlook. On EPD, Cramer praises the management team and likes its track record of executing growth projects and integrating acquisitions. [View news story]
Even though I have lots of EPD @$36 - $40, I worry about the loss of tax favorability. Look what happened to the Canadian royalty trusts that lost tax advantages a few years ago.

  • How To Prepare Your Portfolio For Obama's Keystone XL Decision [View article]
It never ceases to amaze me how environmentalists can poo-poo a pipeline carrying crude oil as thick as molasses over unpopulated land and think that delivering it using thousands of railcars with poor safety characteristics is a better option.

  • Verizon Reports Q4 Revenues Up 5.7% To Record $30B, But Negative EPS Of $1.48 [View article]
We switched three cell phones to Page Plus and pay about $100/month total for the same service that we had with VZ for $300/month. Not all people are ready to switch to carriers with no contracts and plans with less data. That's why the two big guys can sell lots of high dollar plans with two year contracts.

I think Verizon and AT&T are going to have to face a growing population of folks who move down to second tier carriers that are much cheaper and using the big guy's towers. Page Plus is on the Verion tower system exclusively.

  • A Recent History Lesson: How To Play The Dell Acquisition [View article]
50/50...that means the deal will or will not get done.

That's pretty obvious. What's Dell worth in bringing it private? When PE firms buy companies, their intent is usually to keep the good parts and dispose of the losers. And then flip it later. Is it goodbye desktops and servers and sell the laptop business?

Too hard to figure. Also, in the face of HP's split up rumors, it's hard to believe what the hardware industry will look like in a few years.

  • My Mad Method Meets My Wife's IRA [View article]
I believe that only relates to unrelated business taxable income (UBTI), not all distributions from MLPs. In all my years of having significant investments of MLPs in my IRA, I have never come remotely close to meeting the $1,000 UBTI level.

  • Abbott Will Jump On 3 Big Assets [View article]
    From a previous SA post:

"In 2011 Humira generated over 20% of ABT's total revenues. If you look at the pharmaceutical company, AbbVie, which ABT is about to spin off, Humira will easily be over 40% of AbbVie's total revenues. And after the spin-off, Humira will constitute 80% of the profits of AbbVie. Thus, the [2016] patent expiration of Humira is the single most important thing that any investor in ABT or in AbbVie needs to think about."
