  • Project $3 Million - Portfolio Management, New Purchase  [View article]
I opened a position in SO in Dec, 2013 and added to it in March, 2015. The total return overall is 13%. It is doing everything I expect it to do and I am satisfied with its performance and its role in my 27 position portfolio.

Let me throw another thought in. I could strongly consider SO in addition to D.

Alex, you may need a vacation.

Intel doing well in mobile while Apple struggles??

Aren't you concerned you credibility will take a hit with such hyperbole?

We get it, jasonjones, that you have an ax to grind. You're getting repetitive.

I have read that there is some sentiment toward restricting what the repatriated cash could be used for, like none for share buybacks, for example.

Apple's dividend compound annual growth rate is about 10% now. That is somewhere about 4-5 times greater than the current inflation rate. While I would like something closer to 15% a year for a few years, I am not unhappy with 10% a year and do not consider it to be stingy.

AVA has the lowest credit rating of any of my utilities, at BBB. The rest are all A-. My three telecoms are all BBB+ (T, VZ and BCE).

<<I have a suspicion that dividend increases are on the way. >>

No need to suspect. Apple has made a commitment to annual dividend increases going forward.

<<I was thinking how can that be fun if your total income is going down. It started at 3.7% in 2008, went to 3.4% in 2009, and then 3.8% in 2010 (all YOC numbers).>>

Total income is measured in dollars and cents, not in percentages.

It is not a very meaningful statistic when it comes to making long-term investing decisions. As Apple's share price continues to rise, I would expect buybacks to decrease sequentially.

Total return, the combination of share price appreciation and dividends, seems to me to be more meaningful to the investors. The CAGR of the dividend is also more meaningful than adding an apple (dividends) and an orange (share buybacks), but to each their own.

The buybacks + dividends is a flawed measure of total shareholder return, as buybacks are not direct returns to shareholders, but I know it has become fashionable in some circles to call it that. Total return, as you know, is also not just share price appreciation.

For FY 2015, that measure equaled 47.6 billion dollars, 11.6 billion in dividend payments. You can see it for each quarter since Apple re-initiated the dividend here, from Apple's own website (and it is updated at the end of each quarter):

The table also includes Apple's cash and marketable securities position, quarter by quarter, along with its debt.

<Despite Apple's $200B capital return program announcement, total shareholder returns fell in fiscal 2015. >>

Total return for Apple for the past fiscal year (Oct. 1, 2014 - Sept 27, 2015) was 18%

    It was 1.25% for SPY.

I think most folks will be satisfied to beat SPY by that huge margin.

    Look Michael, stop playing.

Y-O-Y increase in revenue, net income and EPS, etc will be higher in 2015 over 2014 than will be the case in 2016 over 2015.

You have not read carefully at all.

I value dividend increases as a primary metric in my work. We'll find out about that in April.

In the meantime, read for comprehension. Thanks.

I do not. Year over year revenue growth in FY 2016 will be slower than it was in FY 2015.

So, read carefully before commenting and do not recommend to someone who has held Apple since the 1990's that they go short.
