    Stefan, they use a large 1000ah battery pack. Therefore 300 or 400 amps are merely 0.3 to 0.4 C. The reason for such low current is stated as "Temperature rise in Ultrabattery® modules required reducing current for further testing"

    IIRC Ultrabattries are great energy storage devices but they are not that good for power applications.

    NiZn is a troublesome chemistry. It was invented by Thomas Edison and has been around for more than 100 years and still hasn't made any significant real-world progress anywhere. And there are good reasons for that.
    PowerGenix claimed they have "a patented electrolyte formulation that stabilizes the zinc electrode, enabling the cell to match NiCd levels of cycle life". And Nizn could accept 0.5C to 1C charge current according to http://bit.ly/vUFdwL. Both aspects are good but not great compared to our beloved baby.

    "If what I believe is true, the PbC can charge and discharge 2 to 4 times as fast as SAFT's batteries, and the PbC should be cheaper, too. Both "may" last equally endurance wise."

    I'd rather engineers not take advantage of PbC's charge/discharge advantages if these virtues do exist because that scenario would only need a much smaller battery pack while require much more reliability. Let's just keep PbC as good as competitors, not more not less in this case as long as we are cheaper.

    An interesting article about The "electrochemical flow capacitor" .
    What intragued me most about the article was someone pointing out packing costs of either super capacitors or li-ion batteries for grid applications are too expensive.

    "Supercapacitors, similar to lithium-ion batteries, are manufactured in fairly small cells ranging in size from a coin to a soda can. Large amounts of expensive material, such as metal current collectors, polymer separators and packaging, would be required to construct a battery or supercapacitor of the size necessary to function effectively in the energy grid.
    'Packing together thousands of conventional small devices to build a system for large-scale stationary energy storage is too expensive,'"

    Even for a pure capacitor, 1% energy lose only causes its voltage to drop around 0.5%( Energy stored U=0.5CV*V http://bit.ly/LLeETf). 12Volt's 0.5% is only 60mv which makes no difference in such a Start/Stop system. Anyone could simply do the math.

    I second to JP that power is the limit. It is not an easy job for a 16V 40ah battery to give away 50amps and receive twice of that current outside of a lab.

    Renren was a hype and an old one and it faded quite dramatically these days in China. I live in China. I use some kind of social media sites everyday. And Now is not 2009 or 2010, it is 2012. Nobody here talks about Renren any more.

    I strongly suggest investors who want exposure to Chinese social networks should understand Chinese and use those social media sites everyday. And you'll find out all cyber social connections here are deeply bound to one of the two messengers, QQ messenger or MSN. And if MSFT is determined to social networks, it will stand a much bigger chance than Renren.

    Charging an already badly sulfated battery using small current for an extended period could improve its performance and recovery some loss but not all. This kind of method has been used for decades.

    Actually last year I considered OEMs could implement such a system in a S/S car then I dropped that idea because of costs and technical complexity normal customers would never understand.

    Kirk Tierney commented in the previous concentrator on the comparison of NiZn and Pbc, "NiZn has a gas generation problem at high charge speeds, without a gas recombination mechanism of worth. This is a 1C battery technology in reality. PbC in the mid range (20 to 80% SOC) can handle 5C easily and in fact I've seen then eat up 15C regimes."

    And NS use 12 volts 60ah or 70ah PbCs which have much larger charge acceptance than BMW's 16 volts 40ah type.

    5C of a 60 ah PbC are 300 amps. And normally engineers do not intend to push battery to that end because of various reasons. Therefore I am not at all surprised by the report.
