This is enormously important. Liquid fuels are just one option for portable energy - we can potentially do without them! Fuel-less public and private transportation already exists, powered via electricity from third rails, overhead wires, and batteries.
The key question is, which is better: energy delivery via biomass->fuel->v... ? or via biomass->electricit... ?
Given the energy-recovery technology already in use in hybrid cars, plus sufficiently power-dense batteries, even aircraft and locomotives need carry no fuel.
