DONALD INGRAM YEP THERE IS RISK IN EVERY DECISION YOU MAKE. YOU COULD STAY HOME IN FEAR OF ALIENS AND HAVE THE ROOF CAVE IN ON YOU. OR YOU COULD GO OUT AND GET HIT BY A TRUCK OR CAPTURED BY ALIENS. NOTHING IS 100% RISK FREE. IT IS POSSIBLE THAT ALL OF US ARE WRONG IN OUR ESTIMATION OF WHAT WE THINK THE FUTURE IS. NOTHING TO DO WITH HUMANS IS CAST IN STONE AND EVERYTHING I REPEAT EVERYTHING WILL CHANGE. THE ONLY REAL CONSTANT IS CHANGE,SO I WOULD SUGGEST THATR WE MUST REMAIN ALERT TO CHANGE IN ALL THINGS AND REMAIN NIMBLE ENOUGH TO TRIM OUR SAILS AS THE WEATHER CHANGES. MAY GOOD FORTUNE SHINE UPON YOU AS WE ALL STRUGGLE FORWARD.

  • Yes, Gold Is a Decent Inflation Hedge, But It's a Lousy Investment [View article]
hulsey76 There is a whole spectrum of folks holding gold from day traders to the armageddon crowd and all different stripes in between. But they are all entitled to their opinions and I like to hear them all.

fructivor, We were not talking about the value of labor. We were talking about the value of money and gold and their relationship. Whose labor and how much gold does it produce if you insist?

Tell me how many loaves of bread an ounce of gold will buy on a certain set of dates and then tell me how many loves of bread the dollar would buy on those dates and I will be able to judge just how well gold has done and just how well the dollar has done as well as anything else that is dollar denominated.
That blip on the chart between the Brenton Woods ending and the oil shock was an extraordinary period that had a conclusion. We are in another extraordinary period caused in no small part by aging demographics and fraud, it will not conclude as easily as the last one. The oil shock was repairable the aging and cost that come with it and fraud not so easy. Not to mention all the other unsolvable public and private debt around the globe and the lack of reliable/honest number both public and private we need to judge investment quality.

There are a lot of folks in the street selling 18k watches. I wouldn't buy one of those either. Good point about the government though.

    ian and donald

You are playing a game of semantics as long as folks accept it, it is money. It depreciates rapidly but it is money.
Donald, you could get bogus gold bars or coins or have them stolen from you just as easily as an etf can or as easily as an etf could be defrauded. A degree of risk is involved in all things. There are a lot of costs and risks involved in physical that is not relevant with an etf. You might want to considered diversifying your gold holdings amongst etf, physical, and miners stock. You will get plenty of warning before armageddon to go 100 % physical.

  • Natural Gas: The Other Energy Source [View article]
trinvestor, Not if cap and trade is passed and it is applied to motor exhaust pipes as well as factory smoke stacks. Electric cars will not cut it but nat gas ones will, especially since elect. cars add to the smokestack problem. Where do folks think the electricity comes from when they plug in the car to charge it? Not to mention what to do with all these massive batteries that will accumulate. That will make nuclear waste problem look easy.

  • The Gold Standard Is Not the Answer [View article]
There is not enough gold in the world to support all the currency in the world growing everyday by leaps and bounds. The only way to be protected by gold is to own it yourself. If all the gold in the world were divided equally amongst the world's population you would need a microscope to see your share. How in the world would you back all the currency with that.
