  • Las Vegas Sands (LVS) acknowledges it probably broke the law against bribing foreign officials, according to its 10-K filed yesterday. The WSJ ties the admission to dealings in mainland China by people no longer with the firm. The SEC subpoenaed the company Feb. 9, 2011, at which time the LVS board's audit committee opened a probe; LVS doesn't expect any material impact or restatement of past results. [View news story]
David is absolutely correct. LVS is more honest than 90%, and I am probably low in my estimate, of our politicians. obama and clinton even put access to them and the White House on sale. The democrats in particular are all hypocrites.

  • HSBC (HBC) gains 2.1% premarket as its cost-cutting regime pays off, with core earnings up 34% (to $7.6B) from a year ago. $4B in costs has been eliminated since 2011, and the bank believes there's another $1B to go. The offloading of employees and businesses has boosted the capital ratio as well - it rose to 12.7% this quarter, safely above the 9.5% it needs under Basel III. [View news story]
Happy to hear this. I still believe that HSBC is a must bank holding in the global economy.

  • Las Vegas Sands (LVS) CEO Sheldon Adelson draws criticism from gaming executives after his stirring testimony during a Las Vegas trial on the partnership of a rival with Chinese triads reverberates all the way to Macau. The worry from the industry is that Adelson's expressive descriptions of the business dealings of Galaxy Entertainment (GXYEF.PK) could hurt tourism. "Why is he killing the goose that gave him the gold?" asks one casino exec. [View news story]
Adelson along with Mike Levin, runs the best gaming operations in the industry. So he brags a bit.......I too am long LVS and will stay that way.

  • My K.I.S.S. Dividend Portfolio [View article]
Great article, easy to understand and it certainly appears to be working for you.
I am now retired, 70 years, and want to start a portfolio like yours, although probably with even more emphasis on dividends as I cannot afford to wait 30 years any more.
    Any suggestions?

I agree with Jeff and am long in LVS as well. Steve Wynn is good, but Sheldon Adelson is better.

  • Ford (F +1.5%) says its new C-MAX hybrid recorded 8,030 sales in the first two months of its debut, marking the automaker's best launch of a hybrid ever. Of note, the C-MAX outsold the Toyota Camry hybrid during the period and saw more customers trade in Toyota Prius vehicles than any other model when purchasing their C-MAX. [View news story]
I have been a Ford fan for years and have owned their products, 1966 Mustang and 1984, 1986 and 1990 Lincoln Town Cars, when they were real cars, not todays garbage. Hope they can turn that fine Brand around. More recently I purchased a 2011 Ford Expedition, extra long, with flex fuel, which I have never used.
This expedition is fabulous, the most comfortable and powerful car I have ever owned. WE took two road trips, 3000+ miles to Hilton Head via Tennessee and the Smoky Mountains and Florida and Alabama on the way back and another 8000 mile trip through Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington State, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico and then back home to the Great State of Texas.
In two years I put 42.000 miles on the car and I/we love it.

  • HSBC (HBC) is downgraded to AA- from AA by Fitch, which says the bank's diversity across businesses and geography may no longer be a strength, and has instead been "neutralized" by the increasing cost of managing the whole operation. [View news story]
I too think the ratings firms are being extreme. While certainly not perfect, HSBC is, in my opinion, one of the stronger global banks.

  • Intel (INTC) -1.2% AH after Bernstein downgrades shares to Underperform, and lowers its target to $20. Thanks to a Q3 warning and a torrent of negative PC industry data, Intel is trading near its 52-week low, and is valued at 10.5x estimated 2012 EPS. [View news story]
Why is Intel dropping so much and so fast, despite its superior product, cash in the bank and strong research .
    I am confused!
