To be fair, James , the author specifically mentioned the $849 figure, twice as a matter of fact. I think if the reader finds this a significant point of reference , he or she can do the math at any given point in time. I too like to see the price action show some independence from the movement in the gold price but I'm sure that is limited thus the importance of the cost controls.

  • Avoid Newmont Mining [View article]
Buying NEM below $20 did not require much timing as there was AMPLE time. Biting the bullet ? That can be applied to any purchase one ever makes whether one buys a rising stock at an elevated price or a sinking and
downtrodden stock at a depressed price. Both cases involve risk. Comparing gains and losses of one investment to another is meaningless other than as a sort of quality control look back at your investing rationale. For me, buying always involves overcoming fear to some extent while greed always is a considered factor when selling. And I never confuse smartness with plain old luck (as some gold prospector must have once said :) ) Cheers.

Wh-wh-what? Considering the latest quarterly report including astounding AISC reduction, significant debt repayments with more up to 750 million this year, strong production projections, expansion plans, capex management and the strong price action counter to the sector, I couldn't think of a more mistimed piece. Missed the April 1st publishing date I guess. <head shaking>

No doubt lower energy costs a key driver.

That AISC drop of 18% is a real eye opener and if real then I am very encouraged by the management team.

In light of all the new speculation of an Apple iCAR I can't help but think (yet again) that a HERE acquisition could make so much sense. Synergies galore. And Nokia integrated 5G non latency and secure capabilities in the works for IoT and machine to machine. And all that overseas Apple cash looking for a home....note: I have been out of NOK for a while but follow it on Seeking Alpha and Twitter.

  • Newmont Mining should move up with overhang removed, Sterne Agee says [View news story]
Thanks for the info. There are certainly enough external reasons to expect the price of gold to rise; a market correction/crash ; geopolitical event ; (shocking)revelation of the true gold holdings in China. When that time comes with rational reactions and clear uncorrelation all gold boats will rise but in the meantime it is good to see that analysts think NEM is getting in ship shape.

Eliminating lower margins and loss of market share can be two sides of the same coin. I'll take quality over quantity and put my faith in Suri to get it right as he obviously has as former head of Networks and now the entire company. From buying out Siemens to becoming the major foreign Network player in China he and Nokia are making the right moves. Their relationship with SoftBank bodes well for future business in the U.S. via Sprint and possibly T- Mobile. They are ranked a top tier Networking company with a leading 4G LTE patent portfolio. They have the cash to make strategic acquisitions which in fact they are doing to enhance their organic innovation both which keep them on the leading edge of networking technology. How they are more challenged than competitors is beyond me. Anyone who has listened to Suri speak on the future of the company would never reach that conclusion. As for patents they have a new executive in charge via Dolby who will be sure to leverage their portfolio to it's full potential particularly now that with the divestiture of Devices they are free of cross licensing constraints with the additional potential of licensing formerly proprietary technology to former competitors. Their guidance toward the top end or better on margins seems well considered.

http://bit.ly/1pkxdS4 Two technology areas that are of current and supposed future interest of Nokia are location services and ‘the Internet of things'. In this article you can get a glimpse of where things are heading, theoretically, in research by defense agencies and others.
