Eliminating lower margins and loss of market share can be two sides of the same coin. I'll take quality over quantity and put my faith in Suri to get it right as he obviously has as former head of Networks and now the entire company. From buying out Siemens to becoming the major foreign Network player in China he and Nokia are making the right moves. Their relationship with SoftBank bodes well for future business in the U.S. via Sprint and possibly T- Mobile. They are ranked a top tier Networking company with a leading 4G LTE patent portfolio. They have the cash to make strategic acquisitions which in fact they are doing to enhance their organic innovation both which keep them on the leading edge of networking technology. How they are more challenged than competitors is beyond me. Anyone who has listened to Suri speak on the future of the company would never reach that conclusion. As for patents they have a new executive in charge via Dolby who will be sure to leverage their portfolio to it's full potential particularly now that with the divestiture of Devices they are free of cross licensing constraints with the additional potential of licensing formerly proprietary technology to former competitors. Their guidance toward the top end or better on margins seems well considered.

http://bit.ly/1pkxdS4 Two technology areas that are of current and supposed future interest of Nokia are location services and ‘the Internet of things'. In this article you can get a glimpse of where things are heading, theoretically, in research by defense agencies and others.

You should have titled the article “I Hope China Withholds Regulatory Approval" . Same result you desire and a lot more views. As for me , way too much noise. As for the deal : Git `er done!

  • Nokia / Microsoft Deal Runs Into Regulatory Roadblocks [View article]
I think you are right on point. One of the positive arguments for this deal is the freeing up of the patent portfolio once Nokia is no longer a cell phone OEM. It is one of the key rationales for holding for more than the short term. Any threat to this leverage for future revenues certainly must be factored in by the investor. As an aside, this also must be considered by those who are thinking Nokia will re-enter the phone business in the future. (As a double aside, perhaps Nokia internally is having that same debate; just a thought, probably a bad one:) ) ...There are other potential positives ( NSN, HERE, innovation) for me to want to hold Nokia but I find the focus of this article helpful in defining this issue.
P.S. Personally the hardest part of the long hold scenario is not company specific but that it will get overwhelmed by a macro event before it has time to reap the rewards of it's new income strategies.
