Japanese Yen: An Excessively Strong Currency Spells Recession

It seems odd to me that know body wants a strong currency, thats is the respective governments and their central banks. But what of the people who are subject to the daily uses of this strong currency. Isn't their purchasing power ramped up giving them a better standard of living? Or is it that this is not important to their government and it bankers?
