  • Most U.S. consumers remain either unfamiliar with or unenthusiastic about Nokia (NOK) and BlackBerry's (BBRY) latest hardware, according to an MKM survey of 1,500 people. While 51% of respondents owned a smartphone, only 6% plan to buy a BlackBerry in the next 12 months, and just 1% a Nokia phone. Moreover, in spite of the Z10 and Lumia 920/820 launches, 63% of respondents had no idea when BB10 would launch in the U.S., and 61% were unaware WP8 (MSFT) phones are available. BlackBerry is counting on a fresh marketing push to raise its U.S. profile.  [View news story]
I have not seen advertising for any of these products. Have you? I would not even know about them if not for reading these blogs and the industry news.

  • Boeing's (BA) board may decide next month to start taking bookings for an updated 777, which would incorporate lightweight carbon-composite wings. Boeing is on the verge of deciding to offer airlines just GE engines for the plane rather than a choice, meaning that Rolls Royce would miss out. Separately, NTSB investigators are narrowing their 787 probe to the batteries rather than other components of the Dreamliner's electrical systems.  [View news story]

  • Nokia To Compete For The Bargain Bin: A Win  [View article]
Good article with a good overview of the bigger picture. I am long NOK for many of the reasons stated here. Two observations. The high end smart phone, the 920 did not sell well because of lack of demand, but rather due to lack of supply. Also, the smart phone war in the U.S. is not over. It will continue for years with Nokia increasing share over time. I know many waiting for their high end phones to come out through other carriers besides AT&T.

"Meanwhile, Samsung and Apple are a respective first and third on the handset ledger." And who is second on the handset ledger list? Would it by any chance be Nokia? Hmmm...!
