I think you hit the nail on the head - microsoft and ebay are tossing money out the window. Microsoft's Live service will never beat out Google. And ebay will never beat out Amazon this holiday season. They may have enticed some of us to defect short terms but at a high price. ebay has really pissed off both its buyers and sellers the last few years. Yes, ebay may have won a Pyrrhic victory with this promotion but they'll lose the war. They should go back to what they did well and stop trying to play in Amazon's sandbox.
