I am on track to UNDERPERFORM the S&P by about 2%. Losers: $CMLP, $INTC, $PM, $MO, KMP, $LINE, $UAN. Any opinions on these for 2013?

    • Energysystems: Big fan of $LINE, $UAN, $MO/$PM, and I have a smaller position in $INTC. I'm long all except $MO(would buy again in mid 20s. Also long KMI

    • Micah: Not a great year for these high yielders. Interesting that with ZIRP and people turning to equities for income, these all underperformed.

    • blablah: Energy stocks had a bad second half...

    • joe kelly: Join the club Micah. Truth is anyone that beat the market this year was lucky imo.

    • hkimsey: Do you count dividends in your performance? 2% isn't very much and if you re-invest dividends you might actually come out ahead.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: Yes - unfortunately I do. Just took the difference between beginning amount of my brokerage account and the ending
      12/27/12
    • hkimsey: I have medical (ESRX) and better-quality biotechs (CELG). They seem to behave like safe-havens when cyclical stocks are tanking.
      12/27/12
    • hkimsey: NRGY very juicy dividend, but has been cut this year. Also selling assets. Not a good sign. How about larger oil-n-gas Co???
      12/27/12
    • hkimsey: UAN yield looks too-good-to-be-true. Difficulty covering that payment with earnings. Long-term, fertilizer is a good play.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: I could bail on NRGY - They are currently restructuring and appear to be on the right track, but hard to say. It would be a nice tax loss..
      12/27/12
    • Micah: $UAN is an MLP and there has been no hints of a dividend cut - but again, who knows. This is my "Ag Play". I plan on sticking w/ this one
      12/27/12
    • Micah: Should have bought RNF instead of UAN...jeesh
      12/27/12
    • hkimsey: I think you chose right! UAN looks financially stronger than RNF. NRGY is too much of a play on propane.
      12/27/12
    • Energysystems: hk-UAN has an agreement with it's parent for the pet coke until 2027, and are expanding production by 50%. They're very good.
      12/27/12
    • Energysystems: I own both UAN/RNF, I don't think you can go wrong with either.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: Yes - CF Industries is building a new UN refinery about 100 miles from where I live. It is a $1.5B construction project.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: NRGY spun off most of their propane biz to SPH. I got a bunch of their shares deposited in my brokerage when this was complete

    • nickbukowski: I'm +13% vs S&P this year. Currently long: RNO, INTC, MSFT, HPQ, DELL, QLGC, AA, EXC, ABX; BTU, CLF, UNG have been good to me.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: How do you figure? MSFT is the only name that has a positive YTD return (+3%) and all the others have returned minus 20-45%??
      12/27/12
    • nickbukowski: I would sell $UAN, $LINE, $PM, $MO. I think they're all overpriced.
      12/27/12
    • Micah: Not me - I am up 50% in $MO, 70% in $LINE, and over 90% in PM
      12/27/12
    • hkimsey: I would keep $INTC, never mind the warnings of the death of the PC. Lots of yield-chasing going on now. Better buys in non-div growth.
      12/27/12
    • Energysystems: I look at $INTC like a corporate bond with growth. It's the 800lb gorilla in the chip world, and I believe it'll handle the mobile switch
      12/27/12
    • nickbukowski: I only started investing in individual stocks the last 6 months. The first 6 months of this year I lagged the S&P by 2% with mutual funds.

    • Micah: 10-4. I admire your chutzpah in going after extremely damaged names in your quest for value. I am sure some of those will pay of for you.
      12/28/12
    • hkimsey: speaking of extremely damaged, I just bought shares of $NAV!!!!
      12/28/12
    • Micah: $NAV is scary. They were in Forbes recently and sounds like they went completely the wrong direction in developing engines to meet EPA regs
      12/28/12
    • hkimsey: $NAV is basically selling for the cash on it's balance sheet! But they're burnin' thru it pretty fast!
      12/28/12
    • jvix: Add to $LINE and $KMP
      12/28/12
    • Archman Investor: UAN & AGGZF. Both AG plays. Do not be afraid to look outside the box. It is ok not to own what every other single person owns already!!
