The above post is correct in saying that we don't have interoperability between WAN Optimizers like we do with Routers and Switches as this is still a relatively new technology and the standards have not yet been developed.
Cisco WAAS has a number of differentiating features such as transparent network integration, that preserves services on the network, and a module for the Integrated Services Router that brings down the total cost of ownership, and many of our customers are asking for more router integration.

Joe, good article. You are right about Cisco emphasizing WAAS. In fact we had major news for WAAS with an announcement on Nov. 18 in the linked PR below where 7 Service Providers announced their managed WAN Optimization based on Cisco WAAS. WAN Optimization is a fast growing managed service opportunity and Cisco WAAS is being deployed by most of the major MSPs with 9 having announced their service so far. We are finding that customers see a managed service as a good way to save capital while also leveraging the service providers expertise to roll out WAN Optimization quickly.
