  • How To Think About The Apple/IBM Deal And BlackBerry [View article]
The Apple and IBM partnerships is sort of ironic for two reasons.. IBM did an internal study last that conclude BYOD actually had no cost savings and that staff were miffed that the phones were so locked down by IT due to security reasons... things like Itunes and SIRI were locked out.... the second is it will be intersting to see who jockey's for position in enterprise best... the lumbering goliaths who will have to create the software and merge coporate cultures to achieve something or a lean Blackberry with a defined ( finally ) focus.... why people continue to use Apple and Blackberry as comparisons is beyond me... BB threw in the towel on the consumer side when Chen took over.... So keep talking about smartphones sales is a waste of time... in the end it is the quarterly reports that tell the tale... not all us pundits.....

  • Now It's Really Time For Apple To Buy BlackBerry [View article]
I guess ignorance is bliss.... all the pundits do not bother to look at the politics in Canada... after all we are Canadians after all not America... different rules.... Any sale of Blackberry has to be approved by the Federal Governement first... does not matter what the shareholders say.... Just ask Levono last year.... Just ask BHP Billiton's potash takeover bid... very good deal worh billions with guarantees included... governement said no... no appetite for takeover of a large Canadian like BB expecially after approving a somewhat unpopular takeover of Nexen oil by CNOOC of china... the Harper government pretty much said that it may be the last billion dollars takeover unless by another Canadian company or in the country's best interest..... pundits and investors need to do their homework before bandying about "Takeover" talk.....

  • Smartphone War State Of Affairs [View article]
As BB goes would make sense if all BB did was sell phones but there are a number of components to its business model.... not to say it is enough to save them but the company has said they need 10 million device sales yearly to make a proifit.... this just shows that BB is not focused on competing with the big boys anymore.....CEO obviously believes he could go without the smartphone business if required... as for ecosystem... author should research more... currently 10.2 runs most Andoid apps that do not need google services well.. to the point that Amazon will be used as app store this fall ... so if you consider Amazon a lacking ecosytem... parts of the article does not make sense....

  • Apple Ignored Junk, BlackBerry Just Piled In It [View article]
Interesting article.... the major flaw I see with the theory of killing your high end business would be if BB had a thriving premium devices ( which they currently do not ) and all of a sudden dumped a whole pile of cheap phones in said market .. that would constitute killing your high end market... simply not the case.,.,., if anything BB risks their reputation in Indonesia as the flood of really "cheap" smartphones are flooding the market in essence making the Z3 is the mid range in a market like Indonesia... as for Apple... say what you like... we can all have opinions.. but when you make money like Apple does it is all academic....

  • Apple's Missteps Could Be BlackBerry's Turnaround [View article]
The conspiracy theories are laughable.... business spend an enormous amount of time and resources "beating down the competition".... not unusual at all and would not be suprised if it is policy to beat down Blackberry simply because their security is supereor... what many do not not realize is that RSA encryption is ending its life.. this is the encryption used by most "secure systems".... in BB patent portfolio is elliptic curve cryptography...as well as 130 additional patents... will be interesting to see what encryption the "big boys" will license when RSA reaches it end of life.... here is the link per patent and encryption....

  • Analyze And Dump The BlackBerry REIT [View article]
Two points... death spiral actually happens when they burn throught their cash reserves and starts accumulating debt... if chen can stop the bleed.. then BB has a good chance of becoming a Niche market player...as for devices... abject ignorance on many people's part... obviously those who criticize have never used one... and I do not mean reading reviews... where BB failed is not with product.. but in marketing and timing.... if there was actual marketing versus adverising I must have miissed it.... as for timing... lossing market share and trying to regain it is one of the hardest things to do... BB big mistake in timing was trying to compete with Apple and Samsung... as MIcrosoft is finding with WP8 going against the Big Boys at this time is futile in the short term... but as with any business.,. it is cyclical.... today Apple and Samsung are the "must have" company..... 5 years from now... who knoiws...all you need to do is look at the aformentioned BB in 2007....

Great article... quick correction.. the origonal press release never stated DOD was purchasing 80,000 devices... another great example of how lazy journalism seeps into the market... it then comes out BB has lost a sale it never had.... typical...

  • My Other Phone Is A BlackBerry [View article]
The term you need to lookup is sandboxing.... On BB10 and QNX... the phone actually does multitask and can run each app in its own environment... if malware gets in..it ususally changes permisiions on the OS and that is how you get infected... no such chance on BB10.... if you really paranoid a number of 3rd party vendors are starting to supply malware scanners specifically for BB10....

  • BlackBerry: Misdirection And Misconceptions [View article]
Interesting article... wish Apple luck with their end to end security... just ask Samsung how great that is working for them with Knox... spent untold millions over the last couple of years and still cannot release a working version.. Press releases sound great but even the all mighty Apple can be out of their league... BB has a "small window" to entrench their BES10... this will tell more as to their long term survival as opposed to what Apple can or cannot do... remember... does not instill confidence when 14 year olds constantly break their lock screen in all iterations of IOS.... and the company stock piles finger prints from their scanners.... to me would not instill confidence in their security.... if you can bypass the fingerprint scanner or worse yet a simple lock screen.. does not matter how good your security is on a server a compromised phone makes it all useless....

  • Don't Look The BlackBerry Gift Horse In The Mouth [View article]
Actually not.... One little discussed patents is for their current itteration of encryption. They bought it in 2009 and is still uncrackable. The current encryption used in the industry today is at its end of life so to speak so the only vialble on on the market is blackberry;s... should be worth something.....

  • BlackBerry: Z10 Likely To Fail, Q10 And Q5 Give Hope [View article]
Interesting Article... In the end all the comparisons between brands is pointless... the quarterlies are the only thing that tells the tale so to speak... on area I think the author and many "analysts" miss the point is on specs. It is not so much or how high the specs are but how much hardware the OS needs to run.... the reason for having high hardware specs is two fold.... first is marketing... consumers are conditioned to want the "latest and greatest"... but what they fail to see is the reason the specs are so high is that OS many times is so poorly written or old. or bloated it actually needs the fast hardware just to function... this has been my experience with Android... many great ones out there but any mid range phones in my experience are really sluggish.... BB10 runs more efficiently and faster due to how it is written and the OS is structured. . Right now it does not matter to the consumer but if Apple Android and WP8 do not streamline and optimize their OS soon there will be a tipping point where it does not matter how good the hardware is the OS simply will not keep up.... This is where the droning of specs becomes tiresome and not relevant any more....

  • Apple And Samsung Just Don't Have A Chance Against BlackBerry [View article]
First to George.. great article as usual...

What many seem to forget in all this is that with MDM solutions... all the "neat" features that Apple and Samsung users love will be locked out as the security need rise... Apple can kiss Siri and all those wonderful Android apps... gone.... what annoyed users about Blackberry in the government is not just the quality but the functionality that the locked down phones had placed on them. The same issues will now arise in BYOD when MDM solutions are implemented....

Would not be surprised to see Samsung chosen over Blackberry for on simple reason.....It comes down to money... money... money... in government best and what makes sense simply do not come into play.... it is who can "lobby" the best.. the fact the NSA is in bed with Samsung certainly does not bode well for Blackberry.....

As for those who want a made in the USA solution... keep dreaming.... Apple may be a US company on paper.. but they shelter their money overseas... rely heavily on China for parts.... Samung being a Korean company is in the same boat...

Blackberry may have to buy chips from overseas suppliers but the vast majority of parts are made and assembled in North America....
