When Warren Buffett Speaks, It's Still Worth Listening [View article]
"Warren Buffett is the closest thing to a living legend in many investment circles." Unlikely that the " living legend" status remains intact much longer. So sorry.
Kass' Short Bet on Berkshire Falls Short of Reason [View article]
The Doug Kass thesis on Berkshire may be flawed. I did not read it and have no plans to. I will mention that in February of 2000 in a prominent GROCERY STORE in the town I resided in, I noticed the store had put up a free-standing display with do-it yourself day trading stock kits(manuals, how-to etc.).Right smack in the middle of all the food. About two weeks before the beginning of the dot-com meltdown. Sometimes anecdotal evidence is not all bad. The past year or so, I mean I can't flip on a business tv program without words of wisdom referencing Warren. How many invest-like-Buffett books have been published in the past couple of years? To say nothing of the hundreds, or thousands, of Buffett wannabe money managers proudly, openly claiming WEB style of investment. WEB has forgotten more than I will probably ever know about the financial markets. But I do know he has much financial exposure to the markets, and that there may be more big trouble ahead for the economy, especially the financials. And the stock market with it's derivative investments doesn't give a damn about Buffett's stellar reputation.
Buffett's S&P 500 Puts: Big Blunder? [View article]
That Warren Buffett is a brilliant investor/business mind is beyond dispute. His track record of 40+ years speaks for itself. He remains very highly regarded, which reflects well on his integrity. Despite that, the reality for Warren is that markets have tanked in a big way since he wrote his derivative contracts. There has been a meltdown in the US banking system, and world economies are in chaos. More trouble likely ahead. In an historical context, a 15-20 year down market in US equities would hardly be a first. Those who look to Buffett's derivative bets as assurance of a bright 15-20 year outlook for the US market may do well to look again. Maintaining a positive outlook over that time frame means that by definition at the same time you are relying on the same incompetent, corrupt government and corporate officials who were largely responsible for creating this cesspool to begin with.
