  • After A Strong 1st-Quarter, Del Taco Could Climb Further [View article]
LOCOs valuation was crazy and I don't suspect TACO which has been around 50 years will get as nutty. I liked LEVY in the low teens but those who suggest this should be a $20-$30 stock near term are making an aggressive bet. If you believe Levy can boost corporate owned store count 50% to 100% then this one can pay big over several years. Otherwise margins will stay constrained in the value conscious segment of fast food dining and the growth might not be that fast for a franchise that hasn't moved the needle much in the previous decade.

    Chris,

You have built the ultimate life. I hope to continue to follow your great ideas and some day have a smaller scale of the structure, autonomy, and wealth, in the broadest sense, you have.

Mr. Market can be grumpy or happy, rarely is he satiated. I suspect one does best when Mr. Market is grumpy, nonetheless "worth" is in the eye of the beholder to be.

    SG,

I too like EPOL. What percentage of your portfolio is held in foreign equities (relative to domestic, bonds, cash, etc)?

I like ideas that involve the high probability of success and even a deal fail is likely a win in the long run. Selling some puts might be worthwhile.

Mike, it makes sense if you have a few (or more) family members. Also I've heard of success stories in doing both in a retirement and non retirement accounts, amongst other statuses.

    Asset,

What expansion plans are you predicting annually? 20+ stores funded internally? I hope so but I've heard that one before.

    herk,

It's doubtful backtests encountered distortion like we've seen since 2009. But I do think you can drill down into IVAL or GVAL and it will turn up some names for further investigation.

IPKW is another good ETF for those who want foreign exposure.

It uses PKW's methodology (note: PKW has beaten our domestic indexes and correlates very tightly with TTFS ).

    SC,

If you adjust the CAPE numbers and weed out the distorters (ie banks etc) they may have some predictive value in the short term, and especially in the long run assuming quality inputs.

  • Levy Acquisition tapped for more taco gains [View news story]
    Ben,

When did you call this one on SA; did you write it up? Also what fully diluted share count are you using (near 38M+) and what valuation are you looking for in the next 12 months?

Any opinion on their (new) debt structure and profitability potential? It looked like they've only added 90 stores in the past 9+ years although you can find decade old articles suggesting they would grow 30+ stores a year? Maybe this time is different; 10% topline growth would imply at least 30 company owned stores annually or maybe get their avg. ticket prices above Taco Bells?

  • Levy Acquisition Could Offer Value In The Restaurant Sector With Del Taco [View article]
    conso,

You might want to look at the P/S ratio compared to Del Taco owned stores. 500M market cap on 300+ parent owned stores that are doing about 1M each (give or take) is maybe not so cheap. Consider that a P/S of 1 typically assumes a profitable and growing franchise. Also ask what Levy paid (i.e. what the private equity groups were willing to accept; who is the savvy player). They all got their 50% IPO pop in around about way, the PE shops got much more than they paid 5 years back, and Levy is getting a backdoor IPO that has gone from $10 to 15$ already. Can retailer investors pile in and take it higher? Do you expect institutional money to come in now that Levy has shown the light? Questions to ponder.

Lots of crazy speculation on this name lately. Please realize they still will have nearly 200M in debt and likely will be losing money since its hard to be profitable after you pay nearly 18M a year in interest and still have to run your parent owned stores. Also the franchisee fees aren't very large and almost half the 550+ stores are franchised.
