  • JPMorgan (JPM -4.1%) fights speculation its CIO loss could reach $9B by leaking its own expectations it'll be between $4B-$6B, reports Kate Kelly. That amount is still significantly higher than the $2B originally reported by Jamie Dimon last month. The lines are drawn. Earnings are set for July 13.  [View news story]
If someone has a defaulted mortgage that they can't pay, that is often their own fault. Dimon's legal obligation is to make money for shareholders, not subsidize people who bought houses that were too expensive for their situations.

  • JPMorgan's (JPM) trading loss could reach $9B, say people briefed on the situation, with red ink piling up as JPM moves faster than expected to exit its money-losing positions. Jamie Dimon was way off when he warned in May that the initial $2B loss could double in coming quarters. JPM will disclose more details in its July 13 earnings report.  [View news story]
This is earnings for ONE quarter. Future EPS is fine, the loss has already been priced in. It just affects trust in the bank, which is a separate but important issue.

  • As Western Economies Totter, Don't Overlook Explosive Growth In Africa [View article]
The main issue is an actionable way to play Africa's GDP growth. There just aren't transparent, well-regulated stock markets in many countries where foreigners can trade.

The only ones I would touch with some degree of safety and interesting companies are South Africa, Morocco, maybe Kenya, maybe Egypt, and Nigeria if I'm feeling crazy that day. As it is impossible to trade on most local exchanges without using a local broker, it just doesn't work. Some African countries have dual-listings on European exchanges, but for the most part investing in African companies themselves is overly risky and expensive.

"Don't overlook explosive growth in Africa"

I have, and I will. The corporate governance just isn't there. The best way to play Africa is with big US multinationals, however indirect a play that is.

  • Losing Egypt Won't Be A Disaster For Apache [View article]
Wow so much scare-mongering over the Muslim Brotherhood. They won't change the situation that much and are very unlikely to expropriate any Western companies.

Think Turkey, Part II. Is anyone here scared of Turkey. Their government is Islamist too with the military behind the scenes ready to act if things get too crazy, which they usually don't.

  • The Benefits Of Averaging Down [View article]
Averaging down is fine, buying the first leg or two of a position in stock and selling puts on the stock at your lower desired prices for the other legs is arguably better, if you are comfortable with options. I enjoy getting paid to set my limit orders.
