Canadian REITs: Is Nothing Safe?

What are your thoughts as to purchasing the Canadian REITs for the long-term, at this point in time? They have been totally sold down in the current market ~ what would be the risks longer-term. Look at Chartwell Retirement REIT. Also, are the REITs impacted by the changes to the current tax structure relative to trusts in Canada?
