  • Alcoa - Dragon Hurting Both Demand And Supply [View article]
The technology linked by Want2buygold sounds like a precursor to the hydrogen generator developed by 'Alumifuel Power' (AFPW). They make a hydrogen generator to inflate weatherballoons. Helium is getting scarce and expensive. Hydrogen can also be used for fuel cells and telecom backup power systems. AFPW does not use a lot of aluminum for their process.

Alcoa bought a recycling company in 2012. Recyclers are paid half of what new aluminum costs to make, but recycled aluminum saves 95% of the energy to manufacture it from bauxite. This will be a very cost effective source of metal for Alcoa. Buy low, sell high.

It is the light weight of aluminum that makes it a choice over copper for high voltage, overhead wires. Copper is still the better conductor. Also, I don't dispute your claim of 25% loss in India's transmission network. I just want to point out that the loss is created by system efficiency times distance transmitted, so some areas can be improved by local, distributed generation sources, like wind & solar. Distributed generation reduces demand peaks for everyone across the grid.
