  • Things Not All That Bad at General Growth Properties [View article]
Sorry Mr Sullivan, GGP will fail - it has nothing to do with the fundamentals of their business, they are great at what they do, shopping centre ownership and management - and even in shocking down cycles this type of asset actually holds up relatively well (though will still have income falls). GGP's demise is coming from their capital structure; they simply owe too much money and cannot pay it back. Forget talk of revenues, sales per square foot, FFO, etc - it means nothing.

  • Chinese Companies Go Abroad (Part 2: The Consumer Electronics Sector) [View article]
I am completely lost as to what Chinese firms think they will do 'abroad'? It has always seemed to me that is what Chinese firms have always done anyway, produced goods at a lower cost than anyone else an export them abroad. Are you suggesting that they will now try and control their distribution channels and develop marketing expertise to achieve better pricing for their goods?

  • The Chinese Consumer in Time of Financial Crisis [View article]
    Thanks Shaun, great topical article.
How is it possible that consumption can continue to grow so strongly as GDP growth rapidly decelerates via slowing exports which has a multiplier effect on the rest of the economy. With GDP forecast to slow to 5-7% (i.e. a halving of the past decade's growth rate), how can consumption can grow at such a multiple of this number?

  • Equity Buyers, Beware of Companies' Big, Bad Balance Sheets [View article]
Watch out for future commitments - real estate companies with committed construction pipelines, resource companies working on infrastructure projects, telco companies doing network rollouts, etc. These don't show up on balance sheets but are a cash drain
