"its own merits" is some kind of euphemism for "will gold return to trading on its mystique as a mythical hedge against disaster"? Since gold failed it holders in the recent market downturn (too much of it being held in leveraged forms), it would be foolish for buyers not to have learned anything from that experience. Gold has no particular "merit" outside the jewelry trade now, so for it to be coupled to the general market at this point is more of a gift than a cause for compaint...
